McDuffie County building new

■ Work has begun on a new
McDuffie County hospital.
The McDuffie Progress says that
the $30 million medical facility near
Interstate 20. Groundbreaking at the
40-acre site was held in April. The
facility will have 20 private, inpa
tient rooms but will expand to 100
beds.
■ The closing of a restaurant is
called “The End of an Era” by The
Madison County Journal. Bill’s
Bar-B-Que, after 30 years, will
serve its last pulled pork sandwich-

■ A volunteer firefighting service
will get a grant. The Warrenton
Clipper says that its fire department
has gotten a $5,600 firefighters grant
for $5,600 for turnout gear from the
Washington Electric Foundation

■ FISH is collecting toys for 1,000
kids.
The Walton Tribune says that
Faith in Serving Humanity is seek
ing donations of toys and money for
those children “who are in danger of
missing that Christmas spirit with a
few tokens of the season.”
■ The state has added 1.300 acres of
wildlife management areas.

Department of Natural Resources

■ The Cauthen-Lewis Cemetery in
Lamar County is badly neglected.
The Herald-Gazette says that there
are 36 graves, 13 dating from the
1800s.
The cemetery is near Milner.
For five years the graveyard has
become so overgrown, with toppled
and broken headstones, nobody can
read the names. Ownership is
unknown.

Firefighter one course open to citizens
departments require for paid fire
fighters.
Those interested in attending this
course must complete a volunteer
firefighter application form before
Dec. 31.
Application forms may be
obtained from the Oconee County
Fire Rescue office at 1291
Greensboro Highway or online at
www.oconeecounty.com.
The following are prerequisites
for individuals submitting an appli
cation:
■ Submit to a criminal and driver

After marrying the former Merle
Olson, Norville spent several years
as a salesman for a number of com
panies, then he and his wife
launched the soon-to-become
famous tufted-textile industry with
goods and services.
He bought Sims Textile Co. in
1956 and operated out of a chicken
house on Foster Road in Dalton.
Norville Industries was on its way
up.
The company became the repre
sentative for a few, then many, com
panies that dealt with textiles.
He bought, sold and combined. He

Oconee Enterprise in 1998, he
brought along scrapbooks, photo
graph albums, and two books he had
written: “Zach’s Book,” and
“Zach’s Second Book.”
The old chum wonders, “Who can
doubt that before he passed on Zach
had written several more ‘Zach’s?’
He never quit. That was his secret.
