The people who are boring an
artesian well at Savannah think
they have struck coal. The pump
brought up something like coal
and something they call crystal
carbons.
It is rather embarrassing to tlie
citizen of the United States who
boasts that he lives in a land of
law and order to be confronted by
the disgraceful record that while
there were ninety-eight men legal¬
ly executed in this country last
year 175 were lynched.
Mr. John L. Sullivan is report¬
ed by a Boston paper as making
arrangements to spend the sum¬
mer in Mississippi. This he does
because of a recently acquired re¬
spect for the law that may make a
better citizen of him—while he
remains in Mississippi.
A move is on foot to establish
a terra cotta plant on the Yellow
river, three miles from Covington,
where there is an abundance of
the finest clay for this purpose, to
be found in the state, says tlie
Star. A paint or Oker mine is
also located near the same place,
and will probably be opened up
in a short while.
There are in Florida 10,000
orange growers. The acreage is
100,000 and the capital invested is
from $60,000,000 to $75,000,000.
Three seasons ago there were
produced 1,250,000 boxes, two
seasons ago, 2,100,000, and last
season about 3,500,000 boxes. It
is estimated that the crop of 1890
will be over 4,000,000 boxes.
The largest piece of gold ever
taken from tlie earth was dis¬
covered May 10, 1872 at Hill End,
New Soutli Wales, on the claim
of Beyer & Huffman. It was an
irregular-shaped slab 4 feet 9
inches in length and 3 feet 3 indi¬
es in width, with an average
thickness of about three inches.
It weighed something over six
hundred pounds and, although
not virgin pure, assayed $148,
000. The most remarkable part
of the story is that tho men who
found it did not havo money
enough to pay tlioir board bills
tlie week before.
“There is something curious
about the American silver dollar
and half-dollar of 1804,” says a
numismatist. “There were about
20,000 of the dollars coined, but
not one of them got into circula¬
tion. Two of them are in coin
collections to-day, however, and
they are the most valuable of all
American coins. Why the dol¬
lar of 1804 was never in circula¬
tion after leaving the mint is one
of the unsolved government mys¬
teries. Tho half-dollar of 1804 is
surrounded by a mystery equally
profound. There were 150,000 of
these coined, but notouowns ever
known to be in circulation.”
At a grocery store on Church
street, Belfast, Mass., recently
while quite a number of persons
were gathered therein, the pro¬
prietor got them to guessing on
various things, finally coming to
pea boans. A number of guesses
were made as to how many of
them were in a bushel, The
most reckless person in the party
guessed as high as 50,000. From
that there was various other es
timates of a smaller number.
“Well, sir,” said the grocer,
“there are 119,000.” Of course
no one would believe him until he
explained that there were sixty to
a half ounce, and proved it.
“Then how many bank notes will
it take to weigh as much as a sil¬
ver dollar?” he said, “One hun¬
dred!” “seventy-five!” “300!” cried
out several. “Not right,” said the
grocer, “just twenty-two,” which
he illustrated and proved.”
A WOMAN’S DISCOVERY.
“Another wonderful discovery
has been made and that too by a
lady ened in this county. Disease fast¬
its clutches upon her and for
seven years she withstood its
severest tests, but her vital organs
were underminded and death
seemed imminent. For three
months she coughed incessantly
and could not sleep. She bought
of us a bottle of Dr. Kings New
Discovery much for relieved Consumption and
was so on taking
first dose that she slept all uio-ig
and with one bottle has been mi¬
raculously Mrs. Luther cured. Her name is
Lutz.” Thus write

We qnote from bro. Anderson
tlie Coving-ton Star the follow¬
very sensible editorial, which
think will apply with equal
force to the people of Conyers and
Rockdale county:
Atlanta is absorbing everything everything
in the country, and
gravitates towards her as natural¬
ly as the water runs to the sea.
The consequence is, the whole
country has to pay tribute to At¬
lanta.
This is no fault of hers. It is
simply the natural result of the
existing condition of affairs in
this country.
The fact is, it is more our own
fault than it is Atlanta’s. We de¬
pend to much upon Atlanta for
what we want. We must learn to
be more self-reliant and indepen¬
dent. We must learn too be more
enterprising and progressive, and
we must depend and more energies, upon our for
own resources
supplying our wants and neces¬
sities. qualities . .
Atlanta’s absorbing wonderful, and
are now simply drawing the life
she is absolutely
blood out of the whole country
for many miles surrounding her.
Our only safety lies in our pow¬
er for resisting, or our ability for
sustaining this fearful tax upon
our energies and commercial vi¬
tality. must resist it; because

if we do not, we soon
able to sustain it.
Our hope is in building up
home industries, and then sus¬
taining them with our patronage,
as we ought to do. There is no
other way to do it.
We must stop sending things our
money away from home for
we can and ought to produce they as
cheap and as well at home as
are made abroad. This is a duty
we owe to our town, our county,
and to one another.

Below is a letter from Mr. S. J.
Morrow, taken from Thursday’s
Constitution, which is interesting
to those concerned with politics.
I notice in this morning’s Con¬
stitution an article about the
“Florida Steal” for Hayes. I
wish to add my' testimony as to
the part Samuel B. MoLin took
as one of the members of the re¬
turning board that betrayed bis
party on that occasion.
Major M. R. Marks, present
mayor of Orlando, Fla., told me
that he was with Judge McLiu
when he died, and that in pres¬
ence of others he stated it was the
one act of hislifethatlie regretted;
that ho could not withstand re¬
publican I purchased boodle,
the home of Judge
MoLin from his widow (now de¬
ceased) near Orlando Grove and
120 with acres his of land, and conversed
widow on this subject.
AV liether he was guilty or not,
I do not pretend to say, but I do
know that it cost him his life in
this way: Mrs. MoLin told me
he got a judgeship appointment
in Arizona or some one of the
western territories. She went out
there with him. They did not
like it. Ho kicked and was re¬
called to Washington.
While he was waiting there for
a place to be made for him, com¬
mensurate with the services ren¬
dered, she returned to Florida.
He caught a severe cold, returned
to Florida and soon died. ---
Mrs. McLin took republican
papers and tried to be a republi¬
can, but her denunciation of the
yankee were the most bitter of any
person I have met since my resi¬
dence in the south, some seven
years.
I can verify the above by more
than one affidavit. S ’ J. Me ORROW.
