An early announce¬ ment is looked for. Judge Jno. D. Stewart comes out this week in a manly card and appeals to the Democrats of the fifth congressional district to vote for the Democratic nominee in the coming election. In these days of tricks and treachery such devotion to the party is commend¬ able. We call the attention of our readers to the announcement in this issue of W. H. M. Austin and Jno. M. Day as candidates for sheriff and deputy sheriff of this county. We cannot think of two more accep¬ table men for these responsible offices than these two most excel¬ lent gentle j en. We suppose they will have no opposition. We call the attention of our readers to the story the first part of which appears in this issue, en¬ titled, “Was She to Blame,” by Adiiial. We think our readers will find it very entertaining.—We alsc call attention to tho fact that tho Banner is the only paper pub¬ lished in the county that has a real literary correspondent, and she, too, one of merit. We have a copy of an eligant volume entitled “The Story of the Hymns,” which we take pleasure in recommending to ministers, Sunday school superiutendants, and public speakers generally as a most valuable help. We know nothing that would add more to the edict of a heart-stirring hymn than an acquaintance with the circumstances under which it was produced. All popular songs had their origin in great hearts, and under circumstances, which when known, add much to their interest. We understand that a meeting was held iu Macon a few days and tho matter of state senator was satisfactorily arranged. If so, then it will be Gordon: for he is the only man so far spoken of who can satisfy the great heart of the people of Georgia. We do not believe that any man in Geor¬ gia could beat Gordon but Liv¬ ingston, and we are assured that he will not be iu the race. Under the circumstances to push Liv¬ ingston forw r ardto tho senate aud exclude Gordon, would be doing great damage to Georgia from which she could never fully re¬ cover. Let it be Gordon this time, who is known the world over as the greatest living hero of the Southern Confederacy. There was a wreck on the Cov¬ ington and Macon railroad yes¬ terday near Machen, in which two men and seven horses were killed and the engineer wounded. The wreck caused Barnum & Bailey's circus that was billed to show in Athens yesterday to dissapoint fully 15,000 people who had con¬ gregated in the city to witness its performances. The wrecked cars belonged to the circus, all of the horses also belonged to the circus. The men killed was the fireman and a circus man. The circus will show in Augusta to-day, har¬ ing cancelled their engagement at Athens. The wreck was a bad one and it took 200 hands all day yesterday to clear it up. The cir cus will sue the road. It is esti mated that this will cost the Ma con & Covington road from $100 000Sios o v 125,000. me STATE NEWS. Woolfolk is to hang- to-day. He is said to be glad bis end is so near, and still protests bis inno¬ cence. Albert Fame of Texas died last week from an abcess of the throat caused by lodging a blade of grass in his throat. The trotting record was broken on last Thursday by Nebon at Cambridge City Ind. A half mile was made in 1:03. One negro shot another net r Dawson last Saturday night and killed him instantly. The killing was about a little dog. Mr. W. H. Wayne of Monroe has a hog only 13 months old that measures 6 feet in length and G feet in circumference. Bob Redding, a notorious des¬ perado well known in Georgia, was killed in Opelika, Ala., Sat¬ urday morning by a policeman. A young couple were married at the Alabama state fair at Bir¬ mingham on last Friday in front of tho grand stand, after which they stepped into a balloon and sailed off on their bridal tour. John Berry, col., was tried and found guilty of rape upon the person of Miss Ann Dunn, a white woman, near Dulin, Henry county last week before his hon¬ or, Judge James S. Boynton. He was sentenced to be bung on the 29th of Docember. A country negro came in town last Thursday for the purpose of swapping off his mule, and failing to get a trade 4o suit him, he went to a hitching rack, changed his saddle from his mule on a good looking horse and rode the horse out of tho city. Ho is now wanted for horse stealing.—Mil ledgevillo Chronicle. Col. Winn the nominee in tho ninth district who fought the enemy so bravely in the war show¬ ed very clearly the other day that he hasn’t forgot how to light yet. A man named Duncan star¬ ted a campaign slander on the colonel, who meeting the slander¬ er in the public road, proceeded at once to do him up. At the state drill last week at the Piedmont Exposition tho Per¬ ry Rifles won the first prize, which was $1000; the Brunswick Rifles won the second prize of $500 and the Floyd Rifles, third prize, $260 Tho interstate drill came off last Friday. In that contest the Gate City Guards won tho find prize, $2,500; the McCarthy Light Guards won second prize, $750. A serious difficulty occured near Lawrenceville Sunday morn¬ ing between two women and a man, all colored. The two wom¬ en wore fighting when tho man taking the part of oue of the women knocked down tho other. When the woman arose she held a razor in her hand and with one rake cut his throat from ear to ear. He walked about five feet and sat down dead. When last seen he wes still sitting waiting for the coroner. There will be a double wedding at the P edmont Exposition to¬ day at 2 o’clock. Mr Edgar Ful¬ ler and Miss Pearl George, and Mr. Geo. W. Stovall and Miss Antoinette Petty will be happily united in the holy bonds of mat¬ rimony. Rev. Sam Jones assisted by Dr. Leo will perform the cere¬ mony. Ou to-morrow at the same hour Mr. F. M.
