TEMPERANCECOLUMN [This column is under control oft he W. C. T. U. of Conyers.] Mrs. Mary E. Metzgar, presi¬ dent of the district W. C. T. U., has been nominated by the Pro¬ hibitionists of Rock Island, Ill., for the office of County Superin¬ tendent of schools. The opinion of the members elect of the Vermont Legislature regarding the upholding of the prohibiiion law has been ascer¬ tained. Sixty-four favor the law heartily, twenty-three prefer high license, and nine are undecided. An English Lady’s Noble Work’ Lady Henry Somerset, the new¬ ly-elected president of the Brit¬ ish Woman’s Temperance Associ¬ ation, owns a large tract called Somerst vwn which is one of the centres of the poor population of London, and has about 20,000 people living on it. The leasing of the property was formerly con¬ trolled by others, but as soon as the terms of the leases ex¬ pire and the buildings come un¬ der supervision sho sets about to improve them. Her great desire is to rebuild all tlio houses in the district and make them into com¬ fortable homes for tho very poor¬ est at rents they can afford to pay. She expects to soon have really sanitary and comfortablo rooms for 1,200 families at a rent of thir¬ ty cents a week. She refuses to renew the licenses of public hous¬ es on her property and means to close every one just as fast as she possibly can, and does not intend to compensate the keeper of them. A wonderful ^temperance dem¬ onstration took place recently at Eastnor Castle, the home of Lady Somerset. It was projected and carried out by the Good Templars of the West Midland counties. Lady Somerset, several months ago, kindly consented to the use of her beautiful grounds for the purpose. No one at that time imagined the demonstration would assume the proportions it did; yet the thousands were welcomed as gracefully and heartily as tho ex¬ pected hundreds would have been. Rev.) A. Johnson and Mr. J. Poole presided at the meetings, while noted men and women occupied the platform and participated in the exerciseo. Many strong and eloquent speeches were made; none were more eloquent or pro¬ duced a stronger impression than that of the noble hostess. “I know no greater pleasure,” she said, “than that the beauties of the home God lias given me shall be shared 13-day by suoh a“good ly company. I am still more glad to welcome you in the name of our grand cause, and to feel that this is a day when we clasp each other by tlu baud and bid each other take courage in this great battle against evil—a day when men’s and women’s hearts will be strengthened by the sense of un¬ ion which such gatherings bring us.
