The Conyers Volunteers Ordered bythe Governor to assist Sher¬ iff Austin in Guarding the Jail. Last Sunday morning the dead body of Rev. Bailey Hill (col) was found near Clarkston after sever¬ al days search. The body show¬ ed signs of violence and he was evidently murdered, though up to the present very little is known how he was killed. The colored people of DeKalb, especially those around Stone Mountain, are very much wrought up over the matter, and very much wild talk and many extravagant conjectures are being indulged in. Yesterday the report came to Conyers that Mr. Bill Hendricks, who the day before had been ar¬ rested and carried to Conyers jail under the charge of selling liquor, was one of the suspected parties, and that the negroes of DeKalb were preparing to come to Con¬ yers jail, take him from the jail and lynch him. Last night, the above report being corroborated by a report that 75 armed negroes had left Lithonia after dark, Sheriff W. H. M. Austin telegraphed the Gover¬ nor, asking him to order the Con¬ yers Volunteers to help him guard the jail as follows:— To Hon. W. J. Nor then, Gov. of Georgia, Atlanta, Ga. Reports reach me that an arm¬ ed force of 75 negross will at¬ tempt to take a young white man out of our jail to-night and kill him. Please instruct G. W. Weaver, Capt. Conyers Volun¬ teers, to give me assistance, should I need it. W. H. M. Austin, Sheriff. The Governor’s reply:— G. W. Weaver, With Capt. Conyers Volunteers: render Sheriff your company Austin such assistance as may be needed to protect priso ners. W. J. Northen, Governor. Therefore Capt. Heaver held the Volunteers in readiness at the Armory last night till after two o’clock this morning, Every thing- passed off quietly and no Ivncliers appeared.
