We have always heard that tur¬ nip “greens’’ was good for bil lousness. Judging from last week’s issue of our Alliance organ, we think that brother Irwin must be bilious. Give him “greens.’’ Lynch law is always to bo dep¬ recated, even though the course of justice bo sometimes turned aside by or through corrupt methods, but there are mitigating circumstances in the case of the citixens of New Orleans who re¬ cently lynched eleven members of the “Mafia”, an outlawed society organized for plunder and mur¬ der. These men had been ac¬ quitted by the intimidation and bribery of the jury, in the face of evidence of the most positive and convincing kind of the guilt of a number of them of having been in a conspiracy which resulted in the cold blooded murder of the chief of police of that city. The mob which lynched theae citizens were composed of the leading cit¬ izens of New Orleans, many of whom carried in their pockets the “death warnings” issued by the “Mafia”, and who deemed it a question of life or death, whother they or the “Mafia” should be ex¬ terminated. Before condemning the action of these threatened cit¬ izens who have for months been compelled to take every precau¬ tion to prevent their own assas¬ sination it is well to read the opinions of those great commer¬ cial bodies, the Board of Trade, the {Sugar Exchange and the btock Exchange, of New Orleans, expressed in the following pre¬ amble and resolution unanimous¬ ly adopted by them all on the af¬ ternoon of the day the lynching took place: “Whereas the deplorable ad¬ ministration ot criminal justice iu this city, and the frightful extent to winch the bribery of juries lias been carried, lias rendered it no cessary for the citizens of New Orleans to vindicate out raged justice. Be it resolved, That, while we deplore at ail times the resort to taken violence, we consider the action by the citizens this morn mg to be proper and justifiable.
