U. meets every Thursday afternoon at 3 o clock at the residence of the president, Mrs. Kate Hardwick. Over a thousand arrests for drunkenness was Atlanta’s Febru ary record. ________^ Twenty to Keep One. It is estimated that the average saloon keeping can not only live, but actually get rich if he has twenty regular customers, That is to say, twenty drunkards’ fam¬ ilies means one fat saloon keeper. On the other hand one fat saloon keeper means twenty drunkard’s families. If this estimate is cor¬ rect then there must be over twen¬ ty hundred drunkards’ families in the city of Springfield and the country tributary to it. Does it pay to have this number of drunk¬ ards’ families, with the crime and pauperism that results, simply for the sake of getting $500 apiece from about 112 saloon keepers? —Idea. Liquor and the Social Evil Chief of Police John W. Gard mer, writes The Lever in sub stance that the prohibition of the sale of intoxicating liquor in To¬ peka, Kan., has materially re¬ duced the “social evil,” and that prostitution is less common than heretofore. This is undoubtedly the testimony of every police of¬ ficer in Kansas. The chief says: “Of coutse you know as long as there are people there will be prostitution, but men and women will do things when under the in¬ fluence of liquor that they wouldn’t think of doing when sober.” A High License Table. A Thousand Dollar License was strutting down street one Sunday morning on its way to church. It had a prayer book under its arm, and the excise seal was conspicu¬ ous on the lapel of its coat, like a buttonhole bouquet. It joggfed proudly along and passed a Twenty Dollar License leaning against a Sunday Dive. It total¬ ly ignored the poor Twenty Dol¬ lar License, and passed on with its nose in the air, but was arrested by a low chuckle behind it. In great wrath it turned and came back and said: “Miserable social pariah, how dare you insult a respectable member of society on his way to church! Retire into your native slums and no longer offend a pa¬ tient Providence by remaining in sight on the Lord’s day.” “Brother,” said the poor Twenty Dollar License, “We, are in the same boat and should not quarrel. 'Like McGinty, you have on your best suit of clothes, but you areas deep in the mire as I am.” The Thousand Dollar License was livid with rage, and stamping its foot said: “I am a law-abid¬ ing citizen, indorsed by the clergy, bench and bar, more es¬ pecially the bar.” ihe Twenty Dollar License sigea and said: “You see that to ooggan slide over there. Which is the respectable end of it; where the sliders st & rt slowly at the top, or at the bottom where they go like lightning?” ,. rool, T said the Thousand Dol lar License, “there is, of course, no difference.” “Well, then, 'said the Twenty doilar License, “don’u you look down on me and scorn me. You are at the top oi the slide and stast them slowly, but when they get down to me they are going like , excuse me, Hades.
