CONYERS, GA„ JUNE 11, 1896 As a rule, our candidates dor. t have to do much speech making, Money talks in this neighborhood.—Billviiie Ban¬ ner. Dr. Charles W. Lane, the venerable pastor of the Pres¬ byterian church at Athens, is rapidly sinking and cannot possibly live. Dr. Lane has been pastor ol the Presbyte¬ rian church at that place lor twenty-four years, and is a man universally beloved. Will Meyers has again been located in Corbin, Ky., and in Raney, Tex,, Chief Connolly, of Atlanta, has re¬ ceived information to this ef¬ fect from both places and the authorities at both places are sure that they have the right man. Dr. M. H. Melton, one of the delegates to the state con¬ vention from this county, has already begun to practice speaking for that great event. If he doesn’t make a grandil¬ oquent speech on that oc cassion his friends will be sadly disappointed. Maj. E. H. Almand has h : m under training and will doubtless bring him around alright. The results of last Satur¬ day’s primary in Rockdale count) 7 were generally satis¬ factory. Some of the best officers the county has ever had were defeated, but those that were nominated are clev¬ er men and will make good officers. Hope they will all be successful in the regular election, and we promise to do what we can for that end, The Spaniards still contin¬ ue to take the lives of de¬ fenseless non-combatants. On the 2nd instant a column of Spanish troops, commanded by Colonel Ochoa, operating aronnd Jaruco, Havana prov¬ ince, captured a poor misera¬ ble boy of fifteen years of age, named Juan Rodriguez, suf¬ fering from nervous prostra¬ tion and so weak that he could hardly move without assistance, This unhappy creature was dragged from his home, a little farm near Casiguas, and without any compassion lor his pitiable state he was butchered on the roadway to Tapaste for the sole crime of being a cousin of a leader in the rebel army, named Victor Simon, This is only one of many instances where the Spaniards have likewise treated poor, helpless people. "One ewit a doae.” A special from Washing¬ ton to the New York World, of the 7th instant, gives an interview between President Cleveland and Mr. Billy Mc Gunnigle, in which the Pres¬ ident says he will not be a candidate lor the third term, Mr. McGunnigle inferred to the reporter that the President was weary and would wel¬ come the day that brought with it retirem.ent from pub¬ lic life. We are glad to be able to note that we did not quite drag Dr. J. A. Stewart down to defeat with us, as was pre¬ dicted by the Weekly, Not that we rejoice in the disap= pointment of his opponent: for we wish .that all worthy men could succeed in every noble ambition, but because we would have regreted al¬ ways that our blunders had been the cause of disappoint¬ ment to our friends. The Dalton Argus says the day after Kentucky and Vir¬ ginia declared for free silver, the Atlanta Constitution’s market headlines said : f i De mand smaller than a week ago. The depression in bus iness is general throughout the country, Quietness of trade is clearly shown by the bank clearings. Only twice in the past 23 years have May clearings shown a fall¬ ing off from April. I read in the Christian Standard that Miss A M, Fritz, Station A, St. Louis, Mo., would give an elegant plated hook spoon to any one sendiug her ten 2 cent stamps. I sent lor one and found it so useful that I showed it to tny friends and made ? 13 in two hours, taking orders for the spoon. The hook spoon is a household necessity. It cauuot slip into the dish or cooking vessel, being held in the place by a hook on the back. The spoon is something housekeepers have needed ever since spoons were first invented. Any one can get a sample spoon by sending ten 2 eent stamps to Miss Fritz. This is a splendid way to make money around Lome. Very truly. Jenxftte S. To the Public: I wish to express to the public generally and to my friends par¬ ticularly my grateful appreciation for the support given me in the primary of Saturday. My friends all over the county stood up de¬ votedly and faithfully to me to the last. I am at a loss for lang¬ uage with which to properly ex¬ press my gratitada. I need the office to make me a living, but even in defeat it is a solid comfort to realize that one has so many genuine and true friends. I feel it a duty to publicly acknowledge my appreciation of the hearty and liberal, though not altogether successful support, on Saturday. I shall always carry in grateful remembrance the efforts of my many friends. Yery respectfully, CoByery, Ga., Jas. A. Dukes. June 9th 1896. COMMUNICATED. June 4,1896.
