Last Wednesday night a party of ’possum hunters were put to their wits by the appearance of some strange animal. Some of the dogs struck a trail in the woods north of Eastview cemete¬ ry and it was not long before fif¬ teen or twenty were in a mad chase after the animal. It is sai . that it passed through Center street, and after an hour’s trail the dogs quit the race near where they had started. On Saturday night it was chas¬ ed again, starting at the same place as before, and after a warm race the dogs gave it up again Several of the party saw the ani¬ mal and many shots were fired at it, but all missed the mark. Several efforts have been made this week to capture the mysteri¬ ous animal, but all were fruitless. The reports first brought r to town , by the . hunters . were treated . •, as a mere joke and nobody thought much of it; but soma of our most reliable citizens say it is true that some wild animal i 3 in our midst, and that our sporting boys have a splendid opportunity to have some real fun. We understand tbat Mr. J. E. Maddox, who lives just beyond the woods where the snimal is supposed to den, says that some thing of the kind was in that vi cinity some three years ago, but he fails to give it any name. It is said to resemble a man in disguise and when standing up is about the heighth of a man, but when running goes on its four legs. Its color is black and its appearance indicates great mus¬ cular power, both in jaws and limbs The boney ridges in the scull above the eyes are extreme¬ ly prominent and the teeth are very large. The above pen sketch is said to resemble the animal very much, though it does not have long hair. Up to this time the following gen¬ tlemen have had the opportunity of seeing it, and those who doubt the authenticity of the above statement may ask any of them about it: W. N. Everitt, Seab Glenn, W. B. Smith, Marian Plun ket, Luther Hollingsworth, Carl Downs, Clifford Sigman, E. S. Everitt, John R. Maddox, G. W. Alexander, and ethers. Smith, of Dalton, was to have been married yesterday to a beautiful young lady of Dalton, Miss Ida Davis, and we know of nothing that could have inter¬ fered. We suppose that Jesse Smith, who spent his childhood in Conyers, is now a married man It is said that as a boy in short pants he addressed his love and was accepted; and now, after five years of unwavering constancy, they are happily wedded. Mr. Smith has been for some time in the employment of the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill, in Atlanta, and will make his future home in that city. The Banner joins the many friends of the groom in wishing them both all the joy and useful¬ ness possible in this life. PAINTS! Unanimously adopted by the church conference of the Conyers Methodist church November 17th, 1896. Whereas, The last conference of the year is now on us, and the present pastor, Rev. J. W. Quil lian, may be presiding over his last conference in our church, having but one more public ser¬ vice du*ing this pastorate, and Whereas, The church in Con¬ yers is desirous in some way of expressing their feelings of grati¬ tude for the faithful pastorate and able ministry for two years in our church and community, therefore be it Resolved, 1st., That we extend to him and his family our best wishes and constant prayers and will ever remember his service here as a blessing sent from God, and that we believe whatever church may be so fortunate as to have* him among them will never regret it and, if in the wisdom of the “powers that be” he is return¬ ed to us again, we will meet him with glad hearts and open hands. If not, we submit, praying that God may ever direct his course and open to him an effectual door for doing good, and that the love of God may keep us in union of. heart and soul till we meet at tho end of church work in the home above.
