Mr. Clarence Almand, after an absence of several years, returned to Conyers last week, and his ma¬ ny friends here gladly welcome him back to our town, During his absence Mr. Clarence traveled extensively and has gathered an Abundant store of information, which will be of much value to him in the future. The little one had membranous croup and was sick only a few days. The interment was in Rockdale cemetery on Sunday. To the grief stricken mother we would offer our syDI¬ P»thy. Mr. Warren Thrasher and Miss Elon Maddox, both of this eoun ty, were united in marriage on li8t Thursday. Mr. Thrasher is Cne our most prosperous young formers and his bride is a daugh¬ ter of Mr. J. Tobacco Antidot*, 10 c. or CONYERS, GA., THURSDAY, DEO. 10, 1896. THE CHURCH MUST PRE¬ VENT CRIMINALS Mr. Editor :— I find an article in the daily Constitution of the 28rd of November from Mr. C. S. Griffith, of Baltimore, Md., on “Prisoners and Prison Reforms,” that I think is worthy of a sec¬ ond thought, and it will aid our people greatly, if they will study it, when we come to grapple with that great question in the near fu¬ ture. Our present convict system is a foul blot on Georgia’s fair escutch¬ eon. Some change is demanded; a change must be made. But how? Mr. Griffith gives some sound advice in this line. He gives some sound and good advice about helping excriminals—extendin g the helping hand to poor fallen man. He gives some sound ad¬ vice, especially in the best of all, the prevention of criminality. If we held out the helping hand of tener to the overworked father or wayward boy, we would have lees criminals. We go to our churches on the Lord’s day and hear a good ser¬ mon on “Am I my brother’s keep¬ er,” go home well satisfied with ourselves and the rest of mankind can take care of themselves. Oh, shame to our professed Christianity, who are among the first to cast a stone at one of our poor unfortunate neighbors, who were tempted further than they could bear. How quickly we have forgotten that we are our broth¬ er’s keeper—have forgotten so soon to hold out the helping hand Do we feel anothers woe and try to hide the faults we see? Why cannot we remember that with the same judgement we judge we shall be judged? Why cannot we in the future determine to help our fellow man all we can, and try to keep him from falling? When this course is honestly per sued by the professed Christians of any community, we will have less criminality and immorality. The church will have a power that will be felt—this power is in the hand of each individual member. By your acts the world admires or condemns the whole—one drop of ink mars the whole sheet. Thinker. Shelnutt, state evan¬ gelist of the Christian church for Georgia, and former pastor of Bethel church, filled the pulpit at that place last Sunday. He is an able preacher and his many friends in this section were glad of the opportunity of hearing him preach again. If a stranger should meet one of our best citizens in the twi¬ light, he would think that Shef¬ field had a “dog eater.” Mrs. Ama Nail, from near Oak Hill, is visiting relatives and friends in this community. cowan—MOON. On Wednesday, December 2nd, notwithstanding the snow was sev¬ eral inches deep and still falling incessantly, Mr. A. 0. Cowan, of Sheffield, with a few select friend* and relatives, left for the home of Mr. Fayette Moon, in Walton county, where he was happily married to Miss Eppie, Mr. Moon’s youngest daughter, at 8:15 o’¬ clock, Rev. J. P. McConald, of Trip, Ga., officiating. The happy couple left immedi¬ ately for Mr. J. W. Cowan’s, in this county, the father of the groom, where a cordial welcome and a nice supper was awaiting them. Mr. Cowan is one of our clever¬ est and most prosperous young men, and we congratulate him o* securing for a life partner a young lady possessing so many charm¬ ing traits as Miss Eppie. They will make their future home in Sheffield, where Mrs. Cowan will find a hearty welcome among us. May happiness and prosperity ever attend them. ELECTRIC BITTERS. Electric Bitters is a medicine suited for any season, but per¬ haps more generally needed, when the languid exhausted feeling pre¬ vails, when the liver is torpid and sluggish and the need of a tonic and alterative is felt. A prompt use of this medicine has often averted long and perhaps fatal bilious fevers. No medicine will act more surely in counteracting and freeing the system from the malarial poison. Headache, In¬ digestion, Constipation, Dizzi¬ ness yield to Electiic Bitters. 50c and fl.00 per Bottle at Dr. W. H. Lee’s Drug Store. A BOY’S COMPOSITION. In a public school in New Eng¬ land the teacher thought she would give out natural history subjects as subjects for composi¬ tion. In this way she teaches them Orthography and natural history all at once. The common¬ place subject of “Ants ’ was giv¬ en to a bright boy who said he knew all about it. This is the result of his efforts:. ANTS. “There are many binds of ants My ant Mary Jane is one of these kind. 8he is genUy good natured and when she cornea to see My Mother she brings rue 5 cents worth of penuts aud sez Why James how you’ve growed but when I go and see her and don’t only just waulk on the car pit without cleaning my boots she gits orfly mad. A CHOICE CHRISTMAS GIFT. In the selection of a choice Christmas gift, or an addition to ones own library, both elegance and usefulness will be found com¬ bined in Webster’s International Dictionary, which is the last of the various revisions and enlarge¬ ments of the original “Webstar.’ The International represents fifty times the amount of literary la¬ bor that was expended upon the earliest edition, and is without question, the most complete and reliable work of the kind ever published in a single volume. It is warmly indorsed by eminent scholars throughout the English speaking world, and is a most useful book for the library, the school, the family, the student, and in fact for all who read or write the Englis language. ~ — • m~' Confidence and trust are the sweetest things we can give to a friend. Suspicion is always cold and cruel to a sensitive heart; and it were better to be often deceived by unworthy friends than to be guilty of woanding al¬ a noble soul by suspicion; and, though they are rare, we should always be lookiug for noble souls everywhere.
