O'Kelley, GE0RGIA ,p0SSUM ,ns:T - (from life.) In the “fore de war” times we boys, white and black, used to have many a joilv hunt at night. Sometimes we got badly scared Many old Southern boys lookback with lingering memory, if not re¬ gret, to their happy old times. But to mv story: After supper the torches of pine were lit and all that wanted to go gathered. This night there was but one white and two black boys, about sixteen years old. Amid a din made by blowing the horn, whooping of the boys and howling of dogs-we started for the woods. Pretty soon the lead dog gave mouth then the excitement began for we had confidence in old “King.” We hallooed to him and soon the other dogs joined in and we had a fine race. Soon we knew by their peculiar bark that they had treed and hurrying on we found the tree and shined the vermin’s eyes—this is done by holding the light behind you. One of the boys climbed up and shook him out. It was a fine ’possum. On we went, hallooing to the dogs and talking of ghosts and haunts, with an occasional catch, until we had caught five nice ’pos¬ sums. We were pretty well up in haunt and ghost tales and just here we found a muscadine vine and decided to have a bait. Bay¬ ing our game and the light down near the root of the vine, we gave a vigorous shake and down they came in abundance. We began eating, still talking of haunts and ghosts, when all of a sudden some¬ thing jumped or fell from some¬ where on the light, and out it went . We forgot ’possums and everything else but who could make it home first, which we did in tolerable good order and in pretty good time, considering that we were two miles from the dear spot, with lots of swamps, brier patches and gullies to go through and over. Too scared and tired to get a light and go for our game, we went to bed feeling pretty sore over our trials and losses. Soon next morning we went back and found our ’possums al¬ right and a track of a big coon, near where our torch was lyiug-G.
