This season of the year bring# to my mind many sad memories of long ago, still, they are interspers¬ ed with many just as pleasant. Eighteen years ago this Christ¬ mas I was stretched upon a bed of serious affliction—a suffering mass of humanity. From the 6th of October until the following April I remained in the very jaws of death. Many of the heat cians of Atlanta pronounced my case hopeless and said if I should ever recover I would be an invalid for life. At the end of fourteen months I was able to do a little work and, thank the Lord, I have been able to keep at it ever since, but, of course, have never been a stout man. But few men of my ago have ever had the opportunity of putting friends to such a severe test. As I think of my sore trials and bodily affliction, as I sit by a comfortable fire tonight, it seems that I can see my dear friends as they stood around my bed side presenting me with numerous Christmas gifts. How much cheer it gave me and how much it did seem to alleviate my sufferings. One good old man presented me with a nice walking stick, little thinking then that I would use it. A young lady brought me an iced cake; another one a bunch of flowers; a little boy brought me a (Continued on page eight.) 6i A Bird in The j# hand is worth two in the bush ,'’ and a dollar spent at LACKEY’S will go as far as two dollars spent anywhere else in Conyers.
