CONYERS, GA., JAN. 21, 1897 Sam Palatki confesses that he wrecked the Birmingham Mineral railroad train at Ca haba river and sent twenty eight souls to eternity, was caught at Eatonton, Ga., last Sunday. The best president Ameri¬ ca has ever had is Grover Cleveland. One of the great¬ est proofs that justifies us in this statement is that five year Arbitration treaty with Great Britain. On Monday of last week the representatives of the United States and Great Brit' ain signed the Arbitration treaty, and now two of the greatest, most powerful and most enlightened nations on earth have entered into a sol¬ emn compact of peace. The Henry County Weekly says Turner Johnson, a Clay¬ ton county negro, has been married 21 times, He is years old, and all of his wives are dead, except his present one, who is only 18 years of age. He is the father of 42 children, and is still a vigor pus and lively old coon. «rn wr The investigation of the charges made by Senator Carter on Judges Reese and Sweat is at an end, and no impeachment proceedings of will be taken against either the udges. The investigation, h owever, did not show up the character of the Judges to be be tip-top, and ought to a warning to them to let cham paigne alone. The Dalton Argus speaks a big truth in this sentence: “A young stock gambler won a million dollars on the New York stock exchange last week in twenty minutes, and everybody is congratulating him on his great good luck, Had he been a poor white or negro, caught throwing craps for five cents a throw, he would have been sent to Sing Sing.'’ Dr. J. F. Albert, of Lor¬ raine district, will vouch for the truth of the following bit of news : Sidney Ann Wales, wife of Andrew Wates J colored, who lives on Rev. J. F. Rowan’s place in Lorraine district, this county, gave birth to triplets on the 16 th inst—two boys, weighing To pounds each, and a girl weighing 8 pounds. children. DB. HATHAWAY & OQ, 22'4 South Broad St., Atlanta, Ga. BUNCOMBE. Last Monday afternoon the evening edition of the Atlan¬ ta Constitution began its ca¬ reer, and it bids fair to be quite readable and newsy. The Banner wishes it un¬ bounded success, as it does every honest enterprise; but the starting of the evening paper is not at all in harmony with the editorial doctrine the morning paper has been preaching for a long time. The Constitution’s editorials about free silver, hard times and denying the return of prosperity are all buncombe, and it is not.believed by the business management of the paper. If the business end of that great paper had forseen the calamity it tried to force upon the people, they would never have made the venture of an enlargement, The new venture is proof within itself that the Constitution’s edito¬ rials on the line above men¬ tioned are full of buncombe. Though the jail committee thought different, it seems to us that Mr. Golucke’s plan to build the jail at the back of the court house and to put in fire proof vaults for the Ordinary and Clerk of Court would have been the best plan. Our county needs fire proof vaults, in our opinion, much worse than it needs a jail. As we understand it, the jail and vaults could be built at about the same cost as the jail and residence will cost, but the committee are all good, clever gentlemen and have done what they be¬ lieve to he best for the peo There is more Catarrh in this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was sup¬ posed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pro¬ nounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional dis¬ ease and therefore requires con¬ stitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Care, manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co,, Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on the market. It is taken internally in doses from 10 drops to a tea¬ spoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars for any case it falls to cure. Send for circulars and testimonials Address, F. J. Cheney & Co , Toledo, O. f3p“Sold by Druggist, 75c. A monster petition is to be presented to congress shortly, It is upon the Cuban question, and prays the recognition of the claims of the insurgents. It is said the paper contains the names of 600,000 people If Senator Hale, or some other pro-Spanish member of congress felt so disposed, he could probably get up a counter petition with quite as many names to it.—Savan¬ nah News. o. to li m timili ertrj Hunt up our club¬ bing list. After several weeks of suffering 1 , our kind old friend Mr. W. O. D. Bently breathed his last on Wednesday morning at 4 o’clock, the 13th insfc. Mr. Bently had been a member of the M. E. church for a long time and w as a good man. He told liis friends that he was ready to die, and no doubt he has gone to rest. He often visited his friends and neighbors, but he has gone to a home where he cannot come to see ns; but we must live so that we can meet him on that happy shore, where many loved ones have gone. They are not dead, although unseen; their spirits for awhile have fled and all this boundless universe cries all is life, there are CO dead. UNION CORRESPONDENT. SOMETHING TO KNOW. It may be woith something to know that the very best medicine for restoring the tired out ner¬ vous system to a healthy vigor is Eleetric Bitters. This medicine is purely vegetable, acts by giv¬ ing tone to the nerve centres in the stomach, gently stimulates the Liver the kidneys, and aids these organs in throwing off impurities in the blood. Electric Bitters improves the appetite, aids diges¬ tion, and is pronounced by those who have tried it as the very best blood purifier and nerve tonic. Try it. Sold for 60s or $1.00 per bottle at Dr. W. H. Lee’s Drug Store. MRS. GEORGE GREEN. It is our sad duty to announce the death of Mrs. George Green, who passed peacefully away at the home of her husband in this city, at 10 o’clock yesterday morn¬ ing, Jan. 14th, 1897. Although Mrs. Green had been an invalid for a long while, the immediate cause of her death was lagrippe. with which she was at¬ tacked about two weeks ago. Mrs. Green was a noble Christ¬ ian woman, whose memory will be tenderly cherished by many friends, and sincere sympathy is extended the bereaved husband. —Henry County Weekly.
