TO TIIE CHILDREN
By request we publish below
parts of nil article written bv
Elder R. H. Harwich, editor Pil
grim’s Banner, published at Bos¬
ton Ga:
Dear Children : Did you ever
see a drunk man? If so, you
knew how ugly it looks, and I
want to tell you some of its evils.
There is no excuse for any man
getting drunk, although they of¬
ten try to find excuses to hide
their own guilt and shame, j
When a man has once contract- j
ed the habit of drinking, it is j
hard for him to quit it, and it {
grows on him. and although he
does not intend to be a drunk¬
ard when he commences to drink, j
yet many have been caught in its j
deadly evils. Many hearts have ;
been made to bleed; many tears j
of bitterness and sorrow have been I
shed, and many noble and useful j
lives have been blighted by the
monster curse Ot mankind. 1-j A .
of the . criminals .... :
large per cent m
our crime prisons and guilt to-day excessive can trace their of j :
to use
spirituous liquors. Many a good
woman is spending her life m tor
nient here by unfortunately being
joined to a drunkard. Many
poor children are kicked and beat¬
en by drunken fathers, and are
deprived of %hool privileges and
decent clothes, because he drinks
up all lie can get. He disgraces
his parents, himself, his poor fam
ilyand his friends who would
gladly help hold him up if he’d
try to help hold up himself. Boys
let all intoxicating drinks alone.
You can let it alone, I know you
can. You may say, Oh, I can
take a social drink occassionally
with the boys and not get drunk,
and perhaps you can for a while,
but so many have started that
way and gone on and on not in¬
tending ever to make a drunkard,
and you don’t know but perhaps
that might be your lot. Some
will say that it is for a good pur¬
pose and that we ought to have it,
and a moderate use of it is some¬
times a good medicine. This may
be true, but I think if you will
take all the widows and orphans,
and criminals and their sorrows,
and place them on one side, and
the little good it ever did on the
other side, that you would see
that we could very well dispense
with it altogether.
Girls, when the time comes that
you are to consent to become the
bride of some man, be sure that
he does not drink to excess. If he
should, shun his company until
he proves himself worthy of the
confidence and companionship of
a decent lady. That will reform
him perhaps, if he loves you. If
he loves his whiskey better than
he does you, you ought to find it
out before you marry him. Many
have found it out too late, to
their sorrow.
