How old will the trees be before begiuuiug to bear? Answer.—T he olive tree requires for its best development a deep, calcareous, well drained soil, and will not grow on wet laud. As far as climate and soil are concerned, there are doubtless places in South Georgia, particularly near the sea coast, where the olive would grow and boar fruit, but I do not think they would prove profitable. Thera are thousands of acres in the coast valleys of Califor¬ nia planted in olive trees which prom¬ ise an abundant yield, and, indeed, some orchards are bearing well now, but even there, with soil and climate peculiarly suited to them, they do not prove as profitable as some other crops. Trees for setting out should he three years old, as they are then tougher and more apt to live than the one and two year old trees. You would probably have to obtain them from California, or import them from Europe, as I know of no nursery at the east or south where they can be bought. In California they begin to bear at five to six years of age, and continue in bearing for a long term of years. They should be planted not less than 30 feet each way, and great care should be taken to preserve the roots from injury. Even if you have the proper soil and climate, I would ad¬ vise against your planting more than an experimental plot.—State Agricultu¬ ral Department.
