Entered at the postofflee at Conyers, Ga., as second-class mail matter CONYERS, GA., JAN. 20, 1898 , Publish the Pension Roll. Representative Beach, of Ohio, has introduced a bill providing ed of publication for the and much posting talk¬ of the pension roll, for every county in the country, an¬ nually on Mareli 1, with full data of each case, and to cor¬ rect alleged abuses. It de¬ clares that no pension, ac¬ cept by special act of Con¬ gress, is to be granted under any prior act to any widow or any soldier or pensioner, or to the children of such, who becomes legal ivife of the soldier within live years of the passage of this act, and all pensions heretofore al¬ lowed are to cease on the "widow, remarriage in the case of a or attainment of six¬ teen years of age in the case of children, vtll pensions to to children of pensioners who are over sixteen years are to cease immediately, except where demented or helpless. This plan of publication is strongly favored by Com¬ missioner of Pensions Evans. Boss of the Big Boss. The boss of the *big boss is what they Firealarm are calling Sena¬ tor Joseph Foraker just now. There isn’t the slightest doubt that Boss Hanna owes his election to the Senate to Foraker, nor that lie would rather have owed it to any other man in the world. Foraker was in Washington waiting for Ilan na, through Mr. McKinley, to get down and ask for his help and agree to his terms. Hanna thought he could buy his way through without re¬ gard to Foraker. At the last minute he got rattled and notified Mr. McKinley to get Foraker’s help on the best terms he could, but to get it. It took Mr. McKinley and Senator Foraker two or three hours to come to terms, but in the end Foraket had his way and had sent the telegram lo Columbus that insured Hanna’s election to the Senate, The terms upon which Mr, McKinley secured Foraker’s assistance for Hanna were, of Course, secret, but they prob¬ ably include much that would interest Ohio republicans and were certainly advantage¬ ous personally to Foraker. In the absence of Governor Atkinson, Berner, Hon. Robert L. is president of the sen¬ ate, said to be governor of Georgia. who There are those think that Mr. Berner will be the next chief execu tive of our state. Editorial Comment. The Candler boom is still booming. Atlanta now claims a pop¬ ulation of 120,338. We do not exchange with the Congressional Record. The wave of prosperity seems to have struck New England. Georgia seems to be get¬ ting along very well without a governor. What was it McKinley said about opening the mills some time ago? Suicides continue every day in spite of McKinley’s era of prosperity. Philip Cook has announ¬ ced his candidacy for the of¬ fice of secretary of state. We believe Mr. Bushnell is the first governor of Ohio be inaugurated with an indignation meeting. Whenever there is a tie vote on heading off a debate Speaker Reed can be depend¬ upon to plug up the flow oratory. Dora Richardson Clay is a few days with her General Cassius M. is the latest society from Kentucky. The use of the name Judas in connection with Ohio affair is glaringly J udas did business on a silver basis. An Ohio man became so over politics that he himself in the mouth. sort of wound will be sure to take him out of poli¬ tics. The cotton mill operatives throughout the New England states are out on a strike be¬ cause of a big reduction in their wages. Verily we say unto you this is truly an era of prosperity. Attorney General Joe M. Terrell has announced that lie will not make the race for governor, We are of the opinion that he has a long head and knows when he has a “good thing.” A Pennsylvania rope fac¬ tory is to be removed to Kentucky. We have all along been confident that the lynch¬ ing business in that state would sooner or later attract outside enterprise and capi tal. The politicians high in rank in the republican party are gratified at the re-election of Hanna. The following telegram sent by Hanna to McKinley when he knew he was elected is characteristic of the man just honored by Ohio : “God reigns and the republican party still lives.” In his speech in the senate a few days since Senator Tel ler throws down the gauntlet to republicans in these un¬ mistakable terms: “The re- publican party is H . n I attack it upon the standard ground that it is the gold it if I party. I will destroy can. I hope to see it go down to defeat in 1900, and, if living, I pledge myself to do everything I can to bring it to grief.” When Amos Cummings gets warmed up in his speeches before the House so that he waves his aims flamboyantly, leans far over the desks, pounding vigorously, and “fires” red-hot questions at “the other side,” he ly concludes his interroga¬ tions with a vigorous “hey?” The word is spoken with a decided rising inflection, and is invariably addressed to the Republican members. Perhaps the official repor¬ ters of debates have no hooks or curves to represent the emphatic monosyllable, or perhaps Mr. Cummings edits it out, for he is experienced in wielding the blue pencil, but the emphatic monosyl¬ lable never appears in the printed pages of the Congres¬ sional Record, The city council of Milledge ville taxes cigarette dealers $500 a year. The remains of Theodore Dur rant, who was hanged in Califor¬ nia recently, have been cremated. Mrs. Mary Traylor, a white wo¬ man plead guilty, last week, to larceny from the house, and ar¬ and was sentenced by Judge 8. Candler to ten years in penitentiary. The Sam Jones tabernacle in will be used by the Unit¬ Confederate Veterans Associa¬ on July 20. Mrs. Jeff Davis her two daughters have an invitation to be at this reunion. Fort Smith, Ark., was visited by a disastrous cyclone on the night of the 20th inst. As a re¬ sult about fifty lives were lost and $1,000,000 worth of property destroyed. As an instance of the terrific force of the tornado a piece of tin roofing was torn from a building and oarried 35 miles before it dropped to the ground. Anna Held, the actress who is advertised as the only woman who makes it a habit to take a plunge bath in a tub of milk, is billed to appear in Atlanta. She comes south to try the effect of a bath in Georgia's famous Jersey milk. The ectea'rio Anna once sued a milkman for ringing in some milk on her which she claimed caused her to catch a cold. FIREBUGS AT WORK. Will Albert and Mollie Walker, both colored, were arrested Tues¬ day morning, charged with burn¬ ing the house of Mrs. Isabel Stanley in Lorraine district. Mrs. Stanley was away from home Monday night and her dwelling with ail its contents was completely destroyed by fire. It is supposed the party or par¬ ties robbed the house and then set file to it in order to hide the theft. At the commitment trial held yesterday the negro woman,Mollie Walker, was bound over on con¬ vincing evidence to await the April term of the superior court, and was sent to jail. Albert was dismissed, as the evidence was not sufficient to bind him over. an open letter To MOTHERS.
