CONYER8, GA., MAY 12, 1898. He Stands For the People. Now that Fulton county has acted—literally cut her own throat—the congressional race has narrowed down to two candi¬ dates—Messrs. Liviugston and Branan. Of the two, we choose Bran an. Wo will explain some of the many reasons why we will sup¬ port Mr. Branau in preference to Mr. Livingston. In the first place Mr. Branan is more closely identified with the people of the district, He 'stands out boldly for the people and is always to be found on the side of the right and the just. Mr. Branan was chairman of the labor committee when a mem¬ ber of the legislature iu ’94 and >95 and took an active part in ev ery bill to protect the working man. He has always been re garded an enthusiastic worker in behaif of any enterprise in which be may have been enlisted. His oongeuiai nature, always unruf¬ fled, has won for linn a host of friends and made him deservedly popular. born in Now Mr. Branan was ton county and his father once re¬ sided iu Lorraine district thi s county. He ia well known throughout the district, having traveled in this part of the state as a commercial salesman for a num ber of years. Mr. Branan surprised all of Colonel Livingston’s friends by the gallant fight he made during the last campaign, and the vote he polled exceeded the expecta¬ tions of his most sanguine friends. This, too, in spite of the fact that he entered, the tight almost at the eleventh liodr aud really had no time to do the nocessary work. Wo have personal knowledge of Mr. Branan’s energy in well doing, and of his sterling eharac and , worth, and . venture . to . ter we assert that the citizens of the fifth district will, if he shall be elected, find in him a conscientious con gressmau, a valiant defender of the rights of free men and an ag gressiye combatant in the strug¬ gle for die peipetual supremacy of liberty and justice. Taking all this into considera¬ tion, and beiug of the opinion that the present incumbent lias served ns long enough, we shall not be unlikely to cast our votes for this true lover and helper of his kind, this unalloyed, unadulterated, un¬ purchaseable man of the people. Yole for Branan. His election to congress will be a victory for the people. Tho government wants 3,000 niggers for service in Cuba, Vint we are afraid that number can't be found with a search warrant. War maps in great demand. A for Branan for C _ ole t. J . on gross. The People's friend. Beer, flour and several other necessities are getting higher ev ery day. _____ The name of Spain street, New Orleans, has been changed to Dewey street. That’s the proper spirit. _ Dewey,s men undoubtedly re membered the Maine. The convention to nominate a candidate for congress from the Fifth congressional district has been called to meet in Atlanta on Thursday, the 9th of June. We presume the executive committee of this county will change the date of the primary from June 23 to June 6. _' We hope Eon. R. B. Berner will make another date to speak at this place. The people are an¬ xious to Lear him. _ Sam Small’s daughter, Lola, has decided not to go on the stage Her latest scheme is editress and proprietress of the Southern Star a new weekly which will be pub¬ lished in Atlanta. Spain’s loss iu ships alone, growing out of the recent conflict in Manila harbor, aggregates $4,700,000. Estimated at their market value, which is much less than Spain paid for them, the figures in round numbers are : Don Juan de Austria, $1,000, 000; Reina Christina, $1,000,000; Isla de Luzod, $200,000; Velasco, $600, 000; Castilla, $500,000 ; Don Antonio de Ulloa, $1,000,000; Isla de Cuba, $200,000; Isla de Mindanao, $100,000 and others, $1,000,000. But these figures represent the smaller part only of Spam’s loss, when the slaughter of her men, together with other damages sustained, are ta¬ ken into view. “Sad and glorious,” indeed was the first of May for Spain. The Banner h is made special ar¬ rangements with the Associated Press, and will receive telegraphic reports as to the war situation throughout each day. These reports will be published two or three times a day, as the im¬ port of news may warrant and deliv¬ ered to customers at the low price of ten Cents per week. THE CENTAUR COMPANY, 77 MURRAY STREET, NEW YORK CITY. BUCK’S JUNIOR AWARDED. The cooking contest at Johnson & Goode’s store, by the little girls for the Buck’s Junior Range, came off on Monday and Tuesday afternoon of this week. The little range was awarded to the little girl under four¬ teen years of age who cooked the best biscuit, and Miss Gertrude Johnson was the winner. The little girls, twenty-nine in all, cooked excellent biscuit and some de serve special mention, considering their ages. Some of them, only six and seven yeais of age, made biscuit that would put to shame many expe¬ rienced housekeepers. Miss Verna Jones was the winner on Monday afternoon and Miss Gertiude Johnson winner on Tuesday. These girls were asked to cook off the tie af¬ ter all were through cooking, which resulted as before stated. These two, and all the girls who cooked, for that matter, received the highest praises from the many visiting ladies, as pan after pan of nice, tempting biscuit left the stove to go before the judges. The judges, Gailey Blisses Blollie Richards, Nellie and Carrie Dukes, did their part well and fair, and Messrs. Johnson & Goode could not have se¬ cured three more competent ladies in the city. The award was made by numbers, the judges and not even the little girls knowing the biscuit, and was absolutely fair and impartial. The contest was indeed, a must en¬ joyable affair from beginning to end, everyone enjoying the hot coffee and biscuits as well as the amusement the little girls afforded in making up their bread. Mr. Paul H. Johnston, The Buck Stove & Range Co’s, efficient salesman, was on hand to interest the ladies in stoves and ranges. He also helped to conduct the contest for his company and expressed himself as well pleased •with the good results from it. The occasion will be long remem¬ bered by the little girls and will prob¬ ably be the means of mothers setting some of them to regular duty in the kitchen.
