Stowers of Shot and Shell, SPANISH LOSS WAS HEAVY Seaman On Marblehead Was Killed and Others Wounded. A Key West special says: Amid a powerful storm of shot from Spanish rifles and batteries the American forces succeeded in cutting the cable at Cien f ue g 0S . M3ehe^d gr and er the r0 Sxnbo e ft t C Nash havinf ville, put out from the ships, the coast previously been shelled. The work of the volunteers was perilous. The cruiser Marblehead, the gun¬ boat Nashville and the auxiliary cruiser Windom drew up a thousand yards from shore, with their guns manned, ready for desperate duty. One cable had already been cut and work was in progress on the other when the Spaniards in rifle pits and a battery in an old lighthouse standing out in the bay opened fire. The war¬ ships replied in a thunderous volley, their great guns belching forth massive shells into the swarms of the enemy. In the meantime the crews of the boats calmly proceeded with their des¬ perate work, notwithstanding the fact that a number had fallen, and finished it, returning to the ships through a blinding smoke and a heavy fire. More than a thousand infantrymen on shore kept up a continuous fire and the bullets from the machine guns struck the warship a hundred times, but did no great damage. Commander Maynard, of the gunboat Nashville, was slightly wounded by a rifle bullet that before striking him passed through the arm of an ensign whose name is unknown. A seaman on the Marblehead named Reagan was killed, and the following were badly wounded: John Davis, of New York; John D. Doran, of Fall River, Mass.; Ernest S. Suntzeonickle, Herman W. Hichneister, Harry Hen¬ drickson, all of the Marblehead; Robt. Boltz, Carteret county, N. C., of the Nashville. Lieutenant Winslow was shot in the hand, making three officers wounded in all. After the Spaniards had been driven from the rifle pits many of them took refuge in the lighthouse fortress, upon which the fire of the ships soon was centered. A four-inch shell from the Windom tore this structure to pieces, killing many and burying others in the ruins. It is estimated, on what is consider¬ ed a reliable basis, that no less than 400 Spaniards were killed. The city for blocks around the land forts was fired by the shells. The Marblehead and the Nashville used their heaviest guns, as well as their rapid-fire guns, and hundreds of shots were thrown into the Spanish troops. It was one of the most terrific bat¬ tles of the war. GUSSIE’S TRIP A FAILURE. She Was Driven Away From Cuba By Spanish Guns. A Key West special says: The steamer Gnssie, which left Tampa, Fla., May 10th, with two companies of the First infantry on board, in charge of 7,000 rifles and 200,000 rounds of ammunition, intended for the insurgents in the province of Pmar del Rio, remained off the coast of ^ Cuba Friday and a Saturday , . and , con voyed by the auxiliary gunboat ning in a vain attempt to land her cargo. staff Captain J. H. Dorst, of the of General Miles, headed the expedition, which returned to Key West Sunday morning. Her commander, who ap¬ peared to be much crestfallen, having failed to accomplish the mission en¬ trusted him, refused to discuss the matter beyond admitting the failure and saying the Gnssie will return to Tampa. attempted At the points where they to land they were met by such a hot fire from Spaniards that they were com pell ed to retire. FRANCE PROVES FRIENDSHIP. A Spanish Protest Is Promptly Turned Down in Our Favor. Official information reached Wash¬ ington Saturday that the Spanish gov¬ ernment had filed a protest at the for¬ eign office in Paris against the permis¬ sion given by the French authorities at Martinique to the United States auxiliary caniser Harvard to remain in the harbor at St. Pierre, Martinique, for seven days to make repairs. The French government took speedy action on the protest and insisted that the United States cruiser, being disa bled, had a full right to remain seven days or such time as may be necessary to complete her repairs. n. E. CONFERENCE ADJOURNS. Work of the ninisters at Baltimore Brought to a Close. A Baltimore special says: The gen¬ eral conference of the Methodist Epis¬ copal church, south, adjourned Satur dftVa At the session at Fourth regiment armory, a communication was read which assumes that the United States has Cuba or is about to secure it. The communication was from Rev. Dr. Lansing Burrows, secretary of the Southern Baptist convention, which had just closed its session at Norfolk. It asks that action be taken by the con¬ ference similar to the following resolu¬ tion adopted by the Baptists: ' "Whereas, Religious freedom is a principle dear to every true American, and especially to every Baptist; there fore, "Resolved, That this convention re ent political affairs in the island of Cuba, they use every proper endeavor secure equality of rehgious belief for e ^ er J ^habitant of that country. FURTHER NEWS FROM DEWEY. __ % Can Take Manila at Any Moment. Spanish Ship Captured. The following dispatch was received by the navy department Sunday from Admiral Dewey; "Cavite, May 13, via Hong Kong, May 15.—Maintaining strict blockade. Reason to believe the rebels are hem¬ ming in the city by land, but have made no demonstration. "Scarcity of provisions in Manila. In the war department Saturday was one of extraordinary activity. Arrange¬ ments for the expeditions to Cuba and 1 to the Philippines continued with un¬ abated vigor. Concerning the former, however, the date of departure is still uncertain and will depend upon the developments of the next few days. This uncertainty, however, in no wise interferes with the preparations for hurrying to Tam¬ pa the large amount of quartermasters and commissary supplies which will be taken to Cuba by the army of occu¬ pation. ROOSEVELT IS READY. Former Assistant Secretary of Navy Joins His Rough Riders. Theodore Roosevelt, lieutenant colo¬ nel of the regiment of rough riders organized by him, arrived in San Antonia, Texas, Sunday morning and shortly afterwards went into camp. Religious services were held in the rough riders’ barracks Sunday after¬ noon and were attended by nearly all the men in the regiment and thousands of visitors from the city. All the men are uniformed and equipped and the men of the first, or Arizona squadron, will receive their carbines, six-shooters and machetes at once. Colonel Roosevelt is enthusias¬ tic over the fine showing made by the regiment.__ HAVANA IS SHUT IN. Cutting of Cable at Cienfuegos Com¬ pletely Isolates Her. A Washington special says: The newB of the cutting of the cable at Cienfuef?os c aase d great satisfaction at th<j n J depart ment, because this was ordered some days ago, and it was h £ d - t bfld been done before the g ^ nisb fl ee t left Martinique. This cuts Havana {rom the world and leaves Blanco without means of communica¬ tion with Madrid or hearing from the outside. THE YALE IS OFF. New Auxiliary Cruiser Leaves St. Thomas Under Orders. The auxiliary cruiser Yale, formerly the American line steamer Paris, which has been at St. Thomas awaiting in structions, upon receipt of orders from the department Sunday morning and information concerning Spanish ves sels being at Martinique, cleared from St. Thomas at 5 o’clock p. m., and sail ed west. A Richmond dispatch says: General Fitzhngh Lee attended the religious service conducted before the troops Sunday afternoon by Rev. Dr. Moses D. Hodge at Camp Lee. He occupied a seat on the platform and near him sat Governor Tyler. When the gen¬ eral made his appearance he was greeted with the wildest enthusiasm, the soldier beys forgetting that the big auditorium bad for the time being been converted into a house of wor¬ ship. •T-Rwl ' 5 ir- h ^1? f9*H 'Z * -zrz: it-rTT^!
