The Georgia "Weekly Press Associa¬ tion held its annual meeting in Newnan Tuesday and Wednesday and transact¬ ed much important business. The officers chosen for the coming year are: President, Walter S. Uole man, of The Standard, Cedartown; first vice president, James E. Brown, Herald and Advertiser, Newnan; second vice president, McAlpin Thornton,Hartwell Sun; recording secretary, W. A.Shack¬ elford, Lexington Echo; treasurer, J. W. Anderson, Covington Star. The office of corresponding secretary, which has been held by P. T. Mc Cutchen, of the Franklin News and Banner, was abolished by virtue of an amendment to the constitution to that effect. It appeared that the office relieved the president of but very little labor, and it went by the board, the work of the office falling upon the president. A telegram from the mayor of Dublin invited the asso¬ ciation to convene in that city next year and the invitation was accepted. ARE CHARNEL HOUSES. A special cablegram from St. Thomas, Danish West Indies, to The New York Journal reports that the Danish authorities have informed United States Consul Vau Horn that coal, of which the United States has 8,000 tons in the harbor of St. Thomas, is contraband of war, and that its re¬ moval by the United States so long as this government is at war with Spain will not be tolerated. Governor Lederman informed the consul, according this dispatch, that any attempt to remove this coal would resisted by the German, French and Italian warships in the harbor and waters near by. Consul Yau Horn is said to have re¬ ferred the subject to the authorities at Washington. EXPLOSION KILLS ELEVEN. Unfortunate Victims Were Working in Tunnel Under Lake Erie. A special from Cleveland, O., says: The lives of eleven men tv ere snuffed out Monday evening in the big water¬ works tunnel that is being constructed under the bottom of Lake Erie as a re¬ sult of au explosion of gas. The tunnel is an immense affair, being projected to extend outward from the shore for a distance of four and a half miles, and it has been un¬ der construction for more than a year. The explosion occurred at a few miu utes before 7 o’clock Monday evening, but nobody will ever be able to tell what caused it, or how it happened, for every witness is dead and the bodies of*ail are lyiug where they fell, 6,000 feet out under the lake. COTTON OUTLOOK GOOD. Returns to Agricultural Department Are Very Favorable. The crop report of the department of agriculture issued at Washington Monday says: The cotton returns to the statisti¬ cian of the department of agriculture made up to July 1st, indicates an av¬ erage condition of 12.2, as compared with S9 on June 1st, 1898, with 86 on July 1st,' 1st, 1897, and with 92.5 on July 1896. The averages of the principal states are as follows: North Carolina, S7; South Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana, 90; Alabama, 91; Texas, Tennessee and Oklahoma, 92; Arkansas, 93; Mississippi, 94; In¬ dian Territory, 89.
