SHADING TREE STEAMS.
New York Tribune.
One of the main causes of failure
of newly-transplanted trees is the
drying of the stem. This begins as
soon as the l'oots are severed by dig¬
ging in the nursery; it is continued
by the exposure of both roots and
stems to dry air while on the way
and until thqfroots are covered with
soil again,'"and ifcl continues, after
that, from exposur* of the stem to
hot suns and drying winds, while
the roots^ wounded, and often set in
loose, uncompacted or unmulcheo
soil, can send up but scant supplies.
Some reduce this danger much by
prunihg the top to a mere stick; oth¬
ers wrap the stem with paper or
straw; others wisely encourage
leaves all the way up from the very
bottom the first season as a means
of shelter, Mr. Edson Gaylord, an
’experienced ©rchardist, strongly ad¬
vises leaning the young tree toward
the 1 o’clock sun. Professor Budd
recommends the same practice, and
says he found it carried out so fully
in Russia that cherry trees, which
are among the greatest sufferers
from trunk exposure, were generally
inclined as much as forty-five de¬
grees, besides being grown as low
bushes. Mr. L. B. Rice writes to
the Tribune, from Michigan, of the
same matter : ‘‘I have had a great
deal of trouble with young trees be
mg killed on the southside, partic¬
ularly those set in the fall. My pre¬
ventive is to set a strong cedar post
eight feet long in the bottom of the
hole, before planting the tree; then
place the tree against the north side
of the stake, and tie. The stake
lasts until the tree is well matured,
and keeps the atm from it at noon,
besides keeping it up right and in
good shape. I have never lost a tree
from that cause so treated.”
CLOSE PLANTING.
Nnt'l. Tribune.
All observed facts go to prove that
close planting of cropsjis wrong; but
just how far apart plants should be
lYom each other to produce the best
results is yet undecided. Grape
vities planted twenty feet apart have
given heavy crops of fine fruit, where
those planted six feet apart have
dwindled to a few bunches of imper¬
The orange growers ot Florida are
now setting their trees thirty-five,
and some prefer forty Let apart.
Some twenty-year old groves, where
the trees are twenty-five feet apart,
are found to be entirely too close,
the roots having overrun and occu¬
pied every part of the soil, and the
trees can otly be kept In a profitable
condition by abundant manuring and
wateting.
We havo advised planting apple
orchards in double rows, thirty’ feet
apart, across fields, leaving spaces
three or four hundred feet between
the rows of planting, so that the
roots would have ample room to ex¬
tend bslors meeting those of the
nearest tows.
We notice in an exchange the re¬
sult of wide planting of oorn for en¬
silage. The land was plowed about
seven incites in depth; twenty-five
one horse loads of barnyard manure
were applied per acre—not a very
heavy dressing. The manure was
harrowed in, and the land well har¬
rowed and dragged until the surface
was smooth and fine. The rows
were marked five feet apart. Three
to four kernels were dropped togeth¬
er every eighteen inches in the row
aud covered with a hoe. About half
a bushel of seed was used per acre.
The field was well hoed with a horse
cultivator, and yielded 102 tons on
five acres. Some of the largest
stalks were fifteen feet high, and
weighed at the rate of thirty-five
tons to the acre. This method of
planting in wide rows and hills saves
seed, penults the air and sun to pen¬
etrate, and makes a thrifty, stout
growth. Too close seeding makes a
dense growth that smothers itself to
a considerable extent.
