The c ountry Gentleman sayr: The
almost universal custom of farmers
in feeding taeir work horses with
dry hay during the summer is not
consistent with the principles of c«<r
rect hygeine, or proinofvo of the
greatest degree of health in horses.
Indeed it is fair to infer that so long
n continuance of dry food is injurious
that it tends to produce a constipa¬
ted con lition of the bowels, and to
iay the foundation of inflammatory
disorders. aDd of severe fevers in
some insl irices. One reason ot tbe
constipating effects of dry hay is its
hard character, which makes it dif¬
ficult to mas’icatc, making the pi r
rceation of the salivary fluid into its
most solid part i slow and difficult
Horses, when subsisting on hay ot
other dry food, have only opportuni¬
to dilute and cool the circulation
two or throe times a day. In fact
many horses in northwestern locali¬
ties are watered only twice daily in
winter and. early spring. Yet a very
little reflection will convince the
owner that more water is necessary
with dry than with green food. In
fact, to maintain the degree of natur¬
al fluidity in the circulatiou it is ne¬
cessary that an extra quantity of wa
ter be given to horses subsisting on
dry food. Farmers in the British Is¬
lands provide their work horses with
an abundance ofgrecu fodder in their
stables both night and dry. Tares
or vetches are very generally used
for this purpose. The horses arc fed
small quantities at a time during the
day, and full lationft when bud time
(at 8 o’cl ick) conics around. In the
morning before the teams go fo wal k
they arc • Iso fed in smull quantities
four or five times between 4 and 7
o’clock. In adoition to, or in place
of vetches, clover, cow grass, trefoil,
lucern, rye grass and oven rye, are
used. The sucoulency of such foods
tends to cool the blood.
The English farm horses are fed
all the bulky food they can consume
for the express purpose of making
tlum as bulky and heavy as practi¬
cable-—it being well understood that
when the stomach is habitually filled,
and so expanded till large bulky, the
blood vessels and frame work also
nec< ssarily develop, to contain a cor¬
responding bulk of blood and support
a corresponding weight of body. A
large aud strong frame and body
cannot, iu (act, ba developed exe pt
by a bulky quantity ol course food
being consumed.
There is nothing inconsistent in
the supposition that large draft hor¬
ses, like the Shire and Norman sorts,
can bo as easily raised iu North
America as iu Europe if bulky food
in large quantity he given to iheui
while growing. Besides clovers in
variety, we have grasses in variety
and abundance for feeding iu the sta¬
ble hero in hot weather. Vetches,
so widely grown in Great Britain,
are not so well adapted as peas and
rye mixed. Peas should be put in
quite early for early soiling, with a
peek ot rye or wheat to three bushels
of p as. The grain will hold the
peas off the ground sufficiently to al¬
low them to be mown easily and
clean. After the middle ot April,
when planted for a succession, flint
corn, at the rate ot a peek to tliree
bushels of peas, can take the place of
the rye. Tbe pea produces a large
am. uut of straggling vine aud this
makes it a very suitable crop for
soiling and cutting previous to and
while in bloom.
Tbe notion that green and succu¬
lent food weakeus horses, is only
partially correct. When horses are
taken from dry, constipating food
aud feel on succulent greeu fodders
the laxative effects are moderate but
necessary and healthy. Horses fed
on dry and concentrated food only
are generally in a condition of incip¬
ient iutlanimation, liable to some
form of file shortening distase. and
generally do not live out two thirds
of their normal and possible life ;
while on ibe other band, horses that
are fully and carefully led with green
bulky and not concentrated food,
grown into animals of great size,
power and eudaiance. They seive
their owners truly and well for a
score of years, living to a good old
age, and are thereafter long an i fre¬
quently remembered for their- faith¬
ful and profitable service*.'
