A FIGHT WITH AN EAGLE. I.KWIH WII.I.I A.vfs S EXPERIENCE WITH THE JUKI) IN THE SJCl’UN* TAINS. M« Pet. «„ Cntrh w Vox i.m the f<:n«le Carries If Ofl-Itmtie With ihe Lewis Williams, who lives in an isolated spot on the Preston Mountains, Pennsylvania, having get a trap to cap¬ ture a fox which he Lad reason to believe was carrying . away his chickens, ^ent ont to look at it, and found it goye. The trap bad been chained to a small stake in the ground, and this had been pulled up and was missing with the trap and chain. Supposing that the fox bad been caught in the trap and had escaped with it, Williams hunted about in the woods for some trace of it, hut could find none. As he was returning home he heard a sudden and great commotion flock „ , of . . of . among _ a crows in a piece woods a quarter of a mile or so from his house. The crows were cawing furiously and were circling around above the tree tops in one particular sp»t, and occa Bionally darted about through the trees, Williams walked over toward the woods, and as he approached the crows in¬ creased their hubbub. When he arrived within gunshot they withdrew to a more distant part of the woods but kept up their noise. Williams had just entered the edge of the woods when he heard the rattling of a chain, and simultaneously a very large bird strutted out from behind a tree, dragging the missing trap, chain, and stake. The jaws of the trap were fastened to one leg of the bird, which was a bald eagle of the largest size. Tho eagle flew from the ground and was rising with difficulty toward the top of a tall dead tree, when Williams fired at it. The charge took effect iu one of the eagle’s wings and it fell to the ground. Thinking to capture the eagle alive, Williams approached it, but, in spite of its crippled wing and the burden of the trap on its leg, the bird flew at him and attacked him with such fury that ho turned and fled from the woods. Hurrying back homo, Williams, without Baying anything to others, pro¬ cured a stout rope and a large feed bag. On his way back to the woods ho noticed that the crows which had attracted his attention to the spot in the first place were hovering over the place where he had left the eagle, and from their peculiar cry and frantic actions ho inferred that something unusual had oconred during his absence. Tho crowa, knowing by the wonderful instinct they posseos that the eagle was wounded, and hating as they do all large birds, had swooped down on the eagle and attacked it in its crippled condition, This attack had been disastrous to the crows, for when Williams again reached the spot three lay dead near tho enraged eagle and several others were dragging them¬ selves away out of its reach, uttering the sharp, gntteral cry which they only litter when wounded or in trouble. The eagle no sooner saw Williams ap¬ proaching than it rushed at him with all the force at its command, hampered and crippled as it was, and forced the flghting at once. Williams had made a noose in one end of the rope he carried, and when tho eagle flew at him ho waited until it was almost upon him and then quickly threw the noose over the bird’s head and it slipped down around its wings, but it pulled the rope taut in its efforts to get at its enemy. As it stood thus straining at the rope Williams suc¬ ceeded in slipping the bug down over its head. He then clasped tho bird around the body. Although now blinded and crippled and pinioned and doubly crippled, the eagle was still unconquered. As Williams stood with his arms around the great body of the bird, endeavoring to secure the month of the bag around Us legs, the eagle suddenly sprang against him and striking him in the stomach with one free talon, with one fierce downward stroke ripped his cloth¬ ing from him and tore the skin from tho flesh in a long strip clear to the waist. Williams quickly released tho bird, and made haste to reach his house, suppos¬ ing that lie was terribly injured. Two men who were thrashing buckwheat for him were then informed of the presence of the eagle in the woods, and they went to the spot and succeeded in overpower it» It was brought to Williams’s and tied to a post in the barn, the trap being removed from its leg. The eagle meas¬ ures eight feet from tip to tip of its y£*igs, and stands nearly four feet high. These birds still nest in the wild and rocky elevations in that region, whore it is barely possible for human bemgs to gain access. They frequentlv ‘neighbor- visit thf sheop pastures of the farm hoods and the poulry yards. Iu defend ing her chickens against one of the bold marauders one day last summer, not far from the Williams farm, Mrs. Jane Dr ban was compelled to field, it for nearly an hour, during which ‘'time it tore her clothing from her and lacerated her flesh terribly with its beak and talons. 8 lie finally killed it with a fence rail. •Xcmu s.wojo aqj njjqffuj O’ In p ju.i eq pres ssojq upi *uAop 4 t eqwj ttrq pawpiopm./pqwlaiqumfejun,, anrotn pamioap ciAoj jo ai doed popvaqqou W°K sdooeidu . rrB ‘ssoiQ '-'K 'a iff I Jffl ;o pjeg moo s ut 2uia'p ihqj jaqai u jo AiaAoostp aqq uo ‘Tjanoo *Sn£rp -sSSJoijayf ni pajvaio em uoipiwn vs y : savs J9U tjtiog ‘-j ‘Sanqsavcmux 9l ll—'AVMy 6M0«0 3HI NiLLHOmj oj THE SHERRY WE I)ItiML HomctblDff Hint Filvnl* (Sc Famous f’ol»ou» of the lio.aia*. Journal says: Just over the county line in Paulding County lives Mr. Manning Phillips. He lias a well forty-five feet deep, walled up with rock forty feet. He could get no onp to go down in it to finish the work desired until last Monday, when Mr. Janifs Boss, a fearless, able-bodied fellow, said lie wasn’t afraid to go down in the old well. A rope was fastened to his body and ho was lowered nearly to the bottom, when those standing around tho well on top of terra lirma heard a rumbling noise and were horrified to see the rook, well and dirt tumbling in upon the living man in the depths below. There came a faint cry for help. His audible voice invoked the presence and prayer of the preacher. Tho holy man of God replied, “I’ll do what I can for you, Jimmie.” And thus completely walled iu with rock above him, below him and around him, he was unable to move his body, but, managed to get his hand to his mouth and push the dirt away. The rope around his body was cutting him fearfully. The men above thoughtlessly tugged away at the rope and were about to pull him in twain. He succeeded in getting his knife out of his pocket and severed the rope that bound him. The men worked for dear life in re¬ moving the rock and dirt and to rescue Mr. Boss from his suffocating tomb. For seven hours and a half he was thus imprisoned. When ho was reached he was almost unconscious, bnt the iresh air soon revived him. He thanked God and his rescuers for deliverauee aud said lie went down in that well a wicked man hut henceforth he would lead a different life. A Way They Hare iu France. The Brunswick, Me., Telegraph says: On the 28th ot October, 1840, persons present at the Northport camp ground, in Waldo County, saw a meteorite fall into the water near the camp. As it fell it burst, into fragments, or that was the conclusion drawn by those who wit¬ nessed its descent. Search was made at the time for fragments, but none were then found, the tide at all times cover¬ ing the spot where the meteorite struck the water. Two years ago one who wit¬ nessed the fall again made a search, and some small fragments were recovered. From time to time the search has been continued and other fragments have been brought to light, one of which was considerately sent to Prof. F. G. Bobin son, of Bowdoin Oollege. More re¬ cently quite a large mass, weighing per¬ haps *20 pounds, was recovered, and this mass Prof. Robinson has now in his possession, much to his gratification.
