A hungry negro was attracted
into Stewart’s store the other day
by a lot of axle grease. Seeing
Joe Goode standing, like a wax fig¬
ure near by, proceeded to inquire
into the price of things. The fol¬
lowing dialogue took place:
H. N. “Mister, what’s dem little
cheeses wnf?”
J. G. “Ten cents. AA r ant some?
H. N. “Has you got any dese lit¬
tle sweetnen crackers?”
J, G. “Yes.”
II. N. “Well gim me one 0’ dem
little cheeses and a nickle’s wof
sweetnen crackers.”
Joe complied with the negro’s
request and received the 15 cents.
The negro retired to the rear of the
store. Reappearing in a few mo¬
ments, Joe questioned him thus:
“Well, did you eat your cheese
and crackers?”
II. N. “Yes Boss,”
J. G. “How did you like them !”
H. N. “Well, boss, dem little
sweetnen crackers was about as fine
as I has eber etin, but I beliebe tu

month of Jan. 1887.

Durham, G. A. Grimes, S. J. R.
Henderson, Mattie Little, G. AY.
Pry, Tnller Slate, Geo. M. Taylor,
John ATells, D. A. AA’ilson.

AA r e regret to know that Dr. F.
H. McCalla will soon leave for
Monroe, which place he will make
his future home. Dr. McCalla is a
good dentist, and we wish him
abundant success at his new place.
This weather looks like “Spring
time, gentle Annie.”
Mrs. Lou Davis, of Covington, is
visiting her parents, Dr. and Mrs.
Quigg, of this place.
Mr. Joseph Butler, of this coun¬
ty, and Miss Emma Crossley, one
of the most charming young ladies
of DeKalb, were married last Tues¬
day. AY T e extend congratulations
and best wishes.
Solid comfort J. E. Maddox,
marched into town yesterday morn¬
ing with the scalp of a huge grey
fox tied to his cap. The fox was
caught near Shadydale and Capt.
J. E. was one of the first men at
the catching. Lish says that aside
from having a fine race he had the
biggest time eating country raised
ham and cutting half moons in
half moon pies he ever had.
Miss Sims is visiting relatives at
the Lawson House this week.
A good deal of sickness is re¬
ported in the county at present.
LIBERTY CHAPEL DOTS.
Refreshing showers.
Mr. Obe McCord and Miss Mol¬
lie Mann were married on the 28th
ultimo. Rev. C. E. Dowman, of
Oxford, officiating. AYe extend
congratulations and best wishes.
Services at the Chapel next Sun
day.
The matrimonial fever is still
raging in this vicinity. May the
good work continue.
The wells in this vicinity are get¬
ting very muddy.
Mr. A. H. A r eal is one of the jol
liest men in this whole neighbor¬
hood—It’s a bouncing baby boy.
Locals scarce.
Dixie.
Rev. Dr. Pierce will preach at the
Methodist church next Sabbath
morning and night.
SMYRNA DOTTINGS.
There was no prayer meeting
last Sunday night.
Dr. Quigg preached at Smyrna
Saturday and Sunday last.
The Sunday school is in a flour¬
ishing condition.
Mr. George Hollingsworth, of
Fulton county, was visiting a few
days this week.
Mrs Samuel Young, from near
Atlanta, returned home last Mon¬
day, after a pleasant visit to rela¬
tives in this vicinity.
Mr. A. J. Ogletree and wife, of
your city, visited relatives here last
Sunday.
Mr. Henry Hollingsworth, of
Clayton county, after a few days
visit to relatives here has re¬
turned home.
It is now about road working
time and every overseer should see
that the roads are put in good con¬
dition.
AYe are glad to know that Mrs.
Mollie McCollum has about recov¬
ered from her recent illness.
Little Oscar O’Neal is slowly im¬
proving.
Messrs. Billie Hollingsworth and
AAUlliam Stowers were in DeKalb
last Sunday on a courting expedi¬
tion.
AYe noticed in the last issue of
the Solid South, that John (Bob’s
John) Hollingsworth was soon to
get married. The writer-who penn¬
ed that local had better be trying
to secure a better half for himself,
instead of writing about things of
which he knows nothing. But it
may be that he has tried and failed.
If that be the case, we will make
allowances for the way in which fie
writes. Any way we will try to
sympathize with the dashing youny
correspondent of Smyrna, on next
Saturday and Sunday.
Uncle Aaron Hollingsworth, one
of the oldest and best citizens of
Rockdale county, died at the home
of his son, last Saturday night at
8 o’clock. He had been in feeble
health for several months. His
funeral was preached at Smyrna
church last Monday at 11 o’clock)
after which his remains were laid
to rest in the Smyrna Cemetery.
