HOME-GROV/N LUXURIES
The majority of farmers, in their
deni re to plant and now many acre?
in what are known as the standard
or commercial crops, ordinarily
■n-’oloot n.Rl.cttjra f’t raise ...... manv little things
that are very conducive to good
living. Perhaps the abort*** of
the s-eafon in this part of the conn
try is the main cause of this neg
lent. It is certain that the tables
of the people who live in towns, are
much better supplied with fine gar
den vegetables and small fruits
than those of families who live on
ifirros, especially on large farms of
those that are but partially improv¬
ed. Farmers generally have cab¬
bage, onions, hems carrots, turnips
cucumbers, and tomatoes, but very
fa’v of t) cm raise cauliflower, which
.is s» easdy raised as cabbage, or
egg plant, which can be produced
with as little trouble as tomatoes.
Celery is very rarely found in a
farm-house unless it is brought
irom some large town, which i
supplied with vegetables bv a mar¬
ket gardener. By the old methods
celery was a. very expensive plant
to raise and blanch, but by the im¬
proved methods it can bo grown
with little difficulty, and it deserves
to have a place in the garden of
every farmer.
Almost everyone who raises corn
has green curs for roasting and
boiling. But on many farms the
time of u. ing them is limited to
tivo or (hree weeks, the usual peri¬
od for core to remain in the milk
state. All the t orn is planted at
about the same time, and as a mat¬
ter of course it nil matures or be¬
comes hard in about the same
number of days after the seed w as
planted. It does not secern to occur
to most, farmers to plant a few hills
of corn during every week from
April to July, and thereby secure
ft succession of roasting cars.
Many farmers do not plant sweet
corn for table purposes, because
thev have nc seed, or for fear if
will “mix” with their ordinary dent
or flint corn.—They deprive them¬
selves of a great and very cheap
luxury by not planting sweet corn
at different times in the spring and
early summer, so as to secure a
succession of green ears. Popcorn
is as desirable in the winter as svreet
corn is during the summer and the
oarlv part of the fall. It is as easi¬
ly' raised as common field eorn, is
an excellent article of food, can he
prepared ani for eating without expense
is promotive of household hap¬
piness Still, popcorn, plain or
sugared, is more common in the
city ibari in the country.
The condiments chiefly found on
farm-house tables are pepper, vine¬
gar, catnip, and mustard. Not in
fvequently grated horseradish is
f utnd. Rut the garden radish,
one of the most delicious of vege
tables, as well as one of the best of
appetizers, is rarely raised by farm¬
ers. The few who do raise garden
radii?lies, sow all the seed at one
time, ml have them in a tender
and crisp condition but a few weeks
at most. By sowing a few seeds
on rich sandy soil every week from
the time.the frost leaves the soil

the city. They do not rank very
high as articles of food. but they
contribute to good living. During
