The following beautiful lines
first appeared in the Salisbury Un¬
ion Banner of May. 1886. It is as
true now as then :
If friends have deserted you, will
fretting reconcile them? Are you
unsuccessful in business, will fret¬
ting increase your income? Did
any man ever fret ten dollars into
bis pocket? If you nre in debt and
can’t pay, be prudent; but above
all, keep cool A long face is not
attractive. A hang down head and
a slouching gait are not elegant.
Look on the bright side. If there
is no bright side to your circum¬
stances, imagine one, and keep
your eye on it. Cheerfulness is
not as expensive as melancholy.
What if the war has destroyed
your property, killed your father,
brother, eon or husband? Remem¬
ber God rules the univeise, and
nothing happens by change; and
though cloud# and darkness veil
His providence, yet justice and
judgment arc the basis of His
throne. Try to retrieve your loBt
fortune. Let the sweet prospects of
doing good and ameliorating the sad
condition of the afflicted and un¬
fortunate around you, be to you as
dear as the loved ones whose ab
sence you mourn, Realize the
great fact, which thousands ignore,
that “all things are of God.” Then
you shall be happy in the midst of
adversity, and the lamp of holy
truth shall flash its heavenly light
across the gloom of death.
Up again brother! heed net a fall)
Hough la the high war, alipa come to all!
Klse to pour feet then! have a good heart.
Now looking forward, make a fresh atart,
l'p then, and onward, never deapalr, fair.

Our New Railr&od.
The incorporators of the New
Life,* Waterpower and Granite
Railroad met at Almand’s hall last
Tuesday week. Dec. 13th.
On motion of J- R. Irwin Col. B.

chairman and on motion of Col. J.
C. Burton M. D. Irwin was elected
secretary.
The roll of incorporators was
called and a majority being present
the body was declared ready for
tha transaction of business.
On motion of Col. Barton a com¬
mittee of five was appointed to se¬
lect the names of seven gentlemen
aud present them to the body for
directors.
The following gentlemen were se¬
lected and unanimously elected :
Hon. \V. L. Peek, Mr. George C.
Selman of Monroe, Col. C. T. Zach
ry of Peachstone Shoals, Thos. D.
Stewart of McDonough, B. S. Wal¬
ker of Monroe, J. P. Tilley and J.
A. B. Stewart of Conyers.

the incorporators the body adjourn
ed.

Col. B, S. Walker M. D. Irwin was
elected secretary. . i
Col. C. T. Zachry put in nomina¬
tion Hon. W. L. Peek for president,
who was unanimously elected. Col.
Peek accepted the position in a few
appropriate words, outling the pos¬
sibilities of the road, He stated
that the road could easily be built,
and with this road completed, the
water powers opened up would spin
all the cotton produced in Georgia.
Col. George C. Selman was elect¬
ed vice-present.
Tbe president appointed the fol¬
lowing committees to solicit sub¬
scription to the new rosd:
Messrs. B. S. Walker, George C.
Selman and Sam Broadnax.
Messrs. J. A. B. Stewart and J.
P. Tilley.
Col. C. T. Zachry and Thomas
D. Stewart.
So soon as twenty-five thousand
dollars are subscribed the stock¬
holders will meet and work on the
new road will commence. All
seemed to be confident in the suc¬
cess of the new railroad, and will
go to work with a vim.
I-ast week Gov. Gordon appoint¬
