The convention in St Louis this
week excelled all former conven¬
tions in harmony and enthusiasm,
The people everywhere are jubilant
over the nominations.
About'$168,000,000 have been ex¬
pended on the Panama canal, and
$^30,000,000 more will be necessary
■to complete-it. The French have
sindcftaken a very big job.
Politics-of the country will now
begin to wax warm, and reserved

this state to either give exact
change to the cent or take the next,
lowest amount ending in 5 or 0, in
soiling passenger tickets went' into
effect on the 1 st inst. The railroads

gradually extend into all Tranches
of trade in t he state.
Judge McCalla's friends are de¬
termined that he .shall enter the
legislative race, This may he well,
as every one is ready to admit that
tlie Judge is a strong man, one
that would ably and wisely repre¬
sent his county. It is the opinion
of many at this time that Rockdale
has no worthier son in whom to
entrust her interests. So it now
appears that the Judge, willing or
unwilling, will be forced into the
legislative race and it will be lor the
people to say by ballot whether or
not he worthy of their confidence
