Mr. Pleas Tucker and family have returned from a very enjoya¬ ble visit to Mr. Mat Tucker’s in Smvrna settlement. Commencement season draweth nigh and everybody is happy, Mr. Luther Not ton and Miss An¬ nie Peek, both of Sheffield district, were married at the bride’s home Sunday last by Elder Bill Almand. The contracting parties are young, hut they have the hearty and sincere wishes of all for a long and happy married life. Miss Annie Ethridge of Birming¬ ham, Ala., is visiting relatives and friends in the city. Mr. Arch Stewart returned yes¬ terday from a pleasant visit to rela¬ tives and friends in LaGrange. The re-union of the 35th Ga. will be held in Conyers on Friday be¬ fore the 5th Sunday in July. Of course our people will entertain in royal style the surviving “boys” of this renowned 35th Ga. Bethany church in Newton coun¬ ty observed “Childrens day’ last Sunday -morning. The programme as read was neat, gotten up with great care and judgment. Appro¬ priate addresses were made by Hon. L. F. Livingston and Dr, Rogers The church decoration was beauti¬ ful beyond word description. Last week it was stated in these columns in a good spirit that Mr. Willis Irwin’s candidacy tor the legislature was construed by us as a joke. Henry Scott, our city barber, has moved his shop from the Night building to the old barber shop un tier the Lawson hotel, Ile does faithful work and is fast building up a good patronage. The centennial of the organiza¬ tion of Presbyterian general assem¬ bly was celebrated at Smyrna last Sunday evening, Able and elo queiit addresses were made by Prof. O’Kelley, Dr. Quigg and Hon. L. F. Livingston. The services through¬ out were very instructive and high¬ ly entertaining. The legislative race in this coun¬ ty has about assumed a decided shape, with the following gentle¬ men to contest the field: Judge McCalla, Capt. Zachry, ’Squire Wil¬ lis Irwin, Col. J. I, Coleman and Mr. Burt Graham. The 18-month old child of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wallace died last Monday morning and was buried in the Rockdale cemetery Tuesday morning. The child’s funeral was preached in the Second Baptist church by Rev. A- J- Goss.-assisted by Drs. Hornady and Johnson. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family. Ex-President Jefferson Davis was eighty years old Sunday. Postal ears will he put on the Covington and Macon railroad on June 11. Editor J. N. Moore has been with the Milledgeville Union and Re¬ corder forty-one years, Mrs. Hunt, an old lady of Honey C v eek district, died last Monday and was buried Tuesday at Smyr¬ na. Her funeral was preached by Dr. Quigg. “The devil has established an agency at DuPont with E. J. Willis at the head, backed by the mayor and council,” is the way a corres¬ pondent of the Wavcross Reporter has of stating the fact that DuPont has a whisky saloon. Last week the national prohibi¬ tion convention, at Indianapolis, Indiana, nominated Gen. Clinton B. Fiske of New Jersy for president, and Hon, John A. Brooks of Kan¬ sas for vice-president. • Library Meeting. Last Monday night the Rockdale Library association held its annual meeting in the court house, The meeting was called to order by Mr. J. P, Tilley. On motion the following officers were elected: President, G. l\ r . W eaver; Vice-President, -J. H. Dab¬ ney ; Secretary and treasurer, Dr. L. A. Lee. The directors are : T. D, O’Kelley, It. J. Guinn. A. D. Summers, J. ('. Barton, C. V, San¬ ford, .1. S. Daniel, II. Y. McCord, J. P. Tilley, John II. Alraand. Motion made and carried that a meeting of the directors he held Wednesday June 5th at 8 o'clock at the courthouse. The following lesblutions rela¬ tive to Judge Stewart and Dr. Lee were unanimously adopted: Resolved, That this association return its thanks to Judge Stewart for some valuable donations. The other resolution is : Be it re¬ solved by the members of the Rock¬ dale Library that the unanimous thanks of this association he ten¬ dered to our efficient Librarian, Dr. Lewis A. Leo, for the very able manner in which he has discharged the duties of said office. Mr. Joe Almand of Carrollton is visiting relatives and friends in the city. Friend Joe will soon be so large as ye heavy editor, which makes him of quite a size. Dr. Hornady, assisted by Rev. Johnson of Atlanta and some of our local ministry, is conducting a pro. tracked meeting this week at the First Baptist church. The services are exceptionally interesting. A great and good work is being done, fhe meeting will continue through Sunday next. The 6-montii old child of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Stephenson of Atlanta died last Sunday and was brought to this place Wednesday for burial. Ifg funeral was preach¬ ed at the grave by Rev. H. F, Buch¬ anan, assisted by Dr. Hornady, To the bereaved we extend our si' - cere sympathy, Ike Taylor, our city barber for some years, died last Tuesday night of consumption. Ike had many good traits, and was especially res¬ pectful to all white people. Up to the 1st of June Mayor Bur¬ ton imposed tines to the amount ot ,$309. 50. This shows not an in¬ crease of crime hut that our Mayor with the assistance of his Marshals is determined to brake up so much recklessness that has heretofore been tolerated. Mayor Barton by his great executive ability is gai n ing the admiration of everybody. The city council, it may be well enough to say, is doing its best for Conyers. It is sparing neither pains, time nor money to give Con¬ yers a city air, one attractive and inviting in every respect. Mr. Columbus Wright, one of the oldest and most popular citi zens of Newton county, had a slight stroke of paralysis of the brain last Saturday. The “Town Toughs,” as they call themselves, ant the Oakland Seminary boys will play a match game of base ball this evening on the Seminary ground. All the games heretofore ha ve been spirited but friendly. It is thought Col. Fry’s new rail¬ road will run by Cora and Starrs ville in Newton county on its way to Eatonton. Mrs. J. E. Maddox is very sick. We hope she may soon he restored to perfect health, Mr, Ed Sims, so we understand, is looking after some of Col, Wal¬ lis’ interests, Attend the Library meeting next Sat. urday week. Mi- George Tilley, who ha 3 been disa¬ bled for some time in one of his feet, is rapidly improving. It is thought by his friends that he will be able to travel about by next Christmas if he has no bar a set. Mrs. P. L. Almand, Mra. Martin and Miss Minnie Matin of Atlanta are visiting relatives and friends in the city. Mr: S. S. Nuckolls is making some im¬ provements on his place on Mill street, When finished the sidewalk and front fence will be ornamental as well as a lasting job of work. Mr. Grier Qaigg is making some im¬ provements on his dwelling. The city council has been [ boned to assist the town boys in buying a brass band. The petition is a long one and made up of ou r very best and wealthiest citizens. Dr, Tumlin, assisted by Dr, Perdue, will begin a protracted meeting at the Christian church to night.
