The victory in each state was pos¬ itive and sweeping. principles plead for Democratic support and the honest people of the states rallied to her defense. The election in New York to a certain ex'tent forecasts the result in 1888. If the head of the pre.si dential ticket rises from this state the democracy has another four years lease of power. Virginia redeemed herself from the oppressive and Thai disgraceful rule of Mahoneism. I. Tictory enough. notable fact that the presi _ It is a dent and his cabinet were on trial in New York. Their administration was to be indorsed or rebuked the polls. The voters spoke in no uncertain tone and rolled up a dem ocratic majority surprising to the republicans. president ha3 slow While the gone Iv in turning the rascals outof office, he has nevertheless gone wisely and surely. At least bis home state is iatistied with his presidential - course. Democracy bas strongholds gained at every’ place, while the of re¬ publicanism have been weakened. Democrats all over the nation are jubilant while republicans are sick and dispirited. Atlanta is infested with .pick pockets. * 4 z The northern bloody shirt wavers and civil war inflamers can now fall back on their dewclaws and howl: “the lack of honesty and votes caus¬ ed our defeat.” Billy Mahonewith his negro allies have done more to dishonor Virginia than any other coalition. The elec¬ tion in the Old Dominion last Tues¬ day hurled them to the oblivion defeat to which their shameful rec¬ ord entitled them. The eyes of the state are riveted upon the prohibition fight in Fulton with county now being conducted such spirit The result of the con test is uncertain. But we are assured of a prohibition victory if the cam paign is wisely managed. It will require work, earnest work, to break down the sale of liquor in the capital city, but it can be done. The right must and will subvert the wrong. - The Christian people of Walton county are divided as follows: Thirteen Methodist churches, 13 Missionary Baptist, 10 Hardshell Baptist, and 3 Christian churches. There is not a Presbyterian church in the county. There are at least 25 colored churches in the county. As a set off to all the churches there are 14 barrooms in the county. The actofthe Legislature requiring the consent of 10 of t he nearest residents before liquor licens can be granted will close up every barroom in the county except in Monroe. Major J. M. Pace, of Covington, was in town this week in attendance upon the adjourned term of our su¬ perior court. If Judge Stewart's resignation is accepted as we under¬ stand it will be tendered, -Major Pace will be a candidate for the judgeship of Flint Circuit. If he should secure the appointment the circuit would be fortunate in procur¬ ing the service of an able jurist, thorough scholar and Christian gen¬ tleman We are for Rockdale first and all the time, but if she fails to produce a candidate, we will natu rally be friendly to Covington and her distinguished son. We are authorized on good author¬ ity to state that Judge John D. Stewart, judge of the superior court of Flint Circuit, will tender his res ignation to the governor sometime in December to take effect the first of January, 1SS6, with s view to re¬ turning to the pi active of his pro¬ fession. It is highly probable he will become a candidate for congres- j oional honors iu the 5th district if he consults the wishes of the people. able He has made a very faithful, j and satisfactory judge. Judge Stewart could fill anv positron. whether legislative or judicial, with credit to himself and honor to his country. New York tnd Virginia have stood n p t n the present administration gallantly. Last Tuesday they spoke eloquently and loudly in praise of democratic supremacy. J, R. Carlton, the father of lion. U. ii. The sale of privileges, it is f ,d brought in fully a thousand do.lars. 1 amounted the printing . of expense to tickets and tags, the premium list not costing anything. There were a few gate keepers end ticket-sellers, and these, with the printing, foot up $150. The advertising in the papers amounted to about $800, and the posters and an agent to distribute them was an expense say $250, To tal 1.200. Now the premium list calls for $9,000 and we will add one thousand more for medals and di plomas, making a grand total of $11,200, leaving a profit for tne soci¬ ety of nearly $5,000. Senator Maxey says of civil ser¬ vice reform: “As it bas been con¬ ducted, it is the blue-ribbon humbug of the period. Believing it would result just as it has, I voted against the bill, and I am fully convinced that it was the right thing to do. I have always believed that the same general principles which control in private business apply equally as well to public business. No good business man would keep employes, however competent, who did not have his success at heart, and who would spend their leisure hours in electioneering for some rival.
