The paths through which men have reached the highest places in this republic lead oftener back to the little log cabin, than to the man sion. Lincoln was a rail splitter, Johnson a tailor, Claj - a mill boy, Garfield a canal hand. In our own slate, Stephens began with nothing, Hill went with his brown jeans clothes from between the plow han¬ dles to school and Brown sold wood and truck on the streets of Dahlon ega. In business, as in statesman¬ ship, there is no limit set to the progress of the boy who was born in the American log cabin. Our great¬ est merchants acquired in the rude and hard life of a poor boy the self reliance and resolution that carried them to fame and fortune.—Consti tulion. A. B. PECAN craw. SE e ' r As the people of the South have at last learned that the practice of planting all cotton means certain failure, they are be¬ ginning to turn their attention to diver¬ sified ing, farming, fruit culture, stock rais¬ etc. There is yet a field with very few la¬ borers, from which large profits are to result—the culture of the Pecan 2 >T-ULt„ It is strange, indeed, that in a climate so well adapted as ours to the raising of this most profitable Nut, there should be so few persons engaged in its culture. Perhaps every one who has given this subject sufficient attention to obtain a fair test, is now an enthusiastic advocate of pecan culture cn a broad scale. The tree is of the same genus as the hickory, which it very much resembles. Its natural range is in the valleys of the western rivers, from Illinois to Texas; and it flourishes with remarkable SIIO eess in almost every pare of the United States. J can furnish trees of the best Texas varieties, two years old, root pruned at one year, at very low prices. Every per son who wants to plant one or’ more thousand, should get rny terms at once. S.
