A STATEMENT\ Editor Solid South: My Dear Sir —On the fifth day of September, of this year, I preached, in the dis¬ charge, of my duties as the Presid¬ ing Elder of the Oxford district, at Union church, in your county. My text was the 25th verse of the 37th Psalm. In my sermon I said nothing about the alliance movement. I discussed neither the whole nor any part of the Ocala Platform. I posi¬ tively did not have the Farmers alli¬ ance in my thoughts My sermon was a dispassionate and carefully prepared review of the signs of promise there were for the future from every standpoint, and an exhor¬ tation based thereupon to hopeful and courageous work. I deplored the loss ef confidence in man and in God as a grave misfortune to church or State. My whole purpose was to emphasize the proposition that God was overhead. Being informed before I left Union by a gentleman who is also an Alii anceman, that some of the congrega¬ tion had thought that part of my ser mon was intended for their order, I. expressed the greatest surprise aad disclaimed any such intention. I ought to know as much about that sermon as anybody Mid until my word is impeached before my friends in Rockdale Co, I can leave the ac¬ tion taken at Smyrna, when my ser¬ mon pased under review, to go for what it is worth. A disclaimer by a gentleman to gentlemen throws the amende honorable upon the misun¬ derstanding parties. Whether or not it is made is an entirely indifferent thing to the party having a right to demand it, since he can afford to do without it, whilst the parties refusing it are in bad plight until they make it. I dure say that such hasty and in temperate private speech and public action as followed my sermon always recoils, and will never meet as it never merits the approval of the fair mind¬ ed and good.
