THE ELECTION.
Next Tuesday is election day
—the day when the voters of
Rockdale must decide whether
a Democrat or Populist is to he
Ordinary, to fill tlie vacancy oc¬
casioned by the death of Judge
Seamans. Col. Helms is the
Democratic candidate, and Mr
P. II. White tho Populist can¬
didate.
We have been here but a short
while, but from what we know
of these gfiitlenien both are
competent and worthy, Both
have been citizens for many
years and are entitled to the re
spjet and confidence of their fol¬
io w citizens. Both have equal
rights and privileges,and no one
d >sires to interfere with these.
B it the circumstances—the fact
t iat the party line has been
drawn—forces on issue. While
our Populist friends feel it their
duty to vote for Mr. White, Dem¬
ocrats should not be careless in
giving Col. Helms their support
and hearty co operation. The
Democracy is tlie grand old par¬
ty which brought the country
safely out of tlie dark days of
reconstruction and restored to
tlie people the rights of ante¬
bellum times, unci which lias
beeu ever since the preservative
element of our institutions. The
Populists are sincere in their
views, but we think they are
mistaken, and that to form now
parties now on new platforms is
a dangerous experiment. Dem¬
ocrats have doubtless made mis
takes, hut we cannot afford to
desort the party on that ac
COUllt.
YVt< honestly believe mu’safe
ty depends upon united action.
especially in State and Nation
h! elections, so long us a certain
element forms a part of I he body
politic, and in local pohti is
tho issue is made and the
squarely on. “United wo stand
divided we fall.’
THE COLLEGE TROUBLE.
The president of the board ot
trustees of the Southern Female
College located tit Lat iange,
Ga., ban written a very plain
statement of facts in very plain
language relating to the trou
hies with Prof Cox, who has
moved to Manchester with his
school. It is evident that the
LaGiange citizens have been
treated with injustice, yet we
see already that the removal
under the circumstances, has

fits received by the citizens of
the city in free tuition to the
poor children were overbalanced
by the money received into the
hands o£ Prof. Cox, in a liberal
support and hea' ty co operation,
so that the charter and nam ) of
tlie college thould be left intact
with the people of Lagrange.
CRIMES, SPORT?, RELIGI )N
Under the above head

But we would remind our broth -

Hector D. Lane, presi lent of
the Cotton Growers’ Protective
Association, says the cotton
crop ot ’95 is cut short thirty
per cent. This reduces a 9,000,
000 crop down to a little over
(>,000,000. Cotton ought to
sell for an average of 7c. this
year.

Wo think the Atlanta papers
are right in trying to prevent
another prohibition election this
fall. Tlie Exposition will give
the people of Atlanta all they
can do for tlio next several
months. In fact a forced elec
lion now would result in thede
feat of the prohibitionists.
Now and then a goldbug
changes to a silverite ; so also a
silverite changes to the gold
standard. They keep auout ev¬
en along this lino.
The Exposition bull fight lias
been declared off. Good for At¬
