At Thursday morning’s session of the American Federation of Labor in Madison Square Garden, New York, a communication was read from the Trade and Labor Assembly of Chicago to the effect that the lagk of harmony among the trades unions of Chicago was due to the interference of lawyers and others who sought to make capital and fees out of the labor movement, and requesting that the incoming ex¬ ecutive council of the federation ap¬ point a committee to establish the labor movement in Chicago upon a sound ba¬ sis. This was referred to a speoial com¬ mittee. At the afternoon session this com¬ mittee recommended that a committee consisting of two members of tho executive council of the federation, go to Chicago to investigate and settle the difficulties. A number of resolutions were referred to appropriate committees, among others one providing for a pe¬ tition to congress in favor of the recognition of the belligerent rights nf Cuba and another protesting against any legislation that will open tne way to Sunday labor. A request from the care-takers of type-setting machines, calling them¬ selves “type-setting engineers,” that they be given a eeperate charter gave rise to a lengthy discussion. The re¬ quest was referred'back to the com¬ mittee on organization. MORE DEEDS OF BLOOD. Turks Still Slaughtering the Unfor¬ tunate Armenians. Advices received at Constantinople from the interior show that forced conversions from Christianity to Mo¬ hammedanism are occurring every¬ where. Women and children whose husbands and fathers have been killed and whose homes have been destroyed have, rather than to lead a life of vag¬ abondage, accepted Islamism, where¬ upon they were housed and fed by Turks. The sincerity of these con¬ versions may be judged from what has occurred in Kaisarea. In this place many women whose protectors have fallen in the massacres were offered their choice between embracing the tents of the koran or being either hacked to pieefes or meeting the worse fate of being kidnapped. Ostensibly the women accepted Islamism and thus rendered their lives and perhaps their honor secure. It is now known that perhaps 1,000 persons were killed in the massacres in Kaisarea. The fury of the Kurds was not satisfied with the death of its victims, but vented itself upon the in¬ animate bodies. The multilation of corpses was frightful, and in many cases was of a nature that cannot be described. ______ Bimetallic Conference in Session. In the evening a banquet was given to the delegates by the French Bimetallic League. EARTH CAVED IN AND SIX WORKMEN BURIED UW» DER THE AVALANCHE. Five Instantly Killed and tbe Sixth, Fatally Injured. Six section men in the employ of the Virginia Coal and Iron Company met their death near Big Stone Gap, Ivy., shortly after noon Saturday. They were working on the Virginia Coal and Iron Company’s road that runs from Appalachia to Pioneer and had stopped at the side of the road under an overhanging stratum of ro«k to eat their dinners where they had a fire built. The section foreman stepped from under the cliff to get a drink of water. CARTER’S CALL For the Assembling of the National Republican Convention. Chairman Carter, of the republican, national committee, has issued the fol¬ lowing call for the national ■ conven¬ tion : “To the Bepublican Electors of the United States: “In accordance with usage and the instructions of the republican national convention of 1892, and by direction of the national committee, a national convention of delegated representa¬ tives of the republican party, will be held at the city of St. Louis, in the state of Missouri, on Tuesday, the six¬ teenth day of June, 1896, at 12 o’clock noon, for the purpose of nominating candidates for president and vice president of the United States, to be supported at the next national election, and for the transaction of such other further business as may be brought before it. The republican electors in the several states and territories, and voters without regard to past political affiliations, who believe in republican principles and endorse the republic*n policy, are cordially invited to units under this call in the formationof a national ticket. “Each state will be entitled to four delegates at large, and for each repre* sentative in congress at large, two del¬ egates, and each congressional district, each territory and the District of Co¬ lumbia, to two delegates. The dele¬ gates at large shall be chosen by pop¬ ular state conventions, called on not less than twenty days, published notice, and not less than thirty days before the meeting of the national conven¬ tion. “The congressional district delegates shall be chosen at conventions called by the congressional committee of each such district in the same man¬ ner as the nomination of a representa¬ tive in congress is made in said dis¬ trict, provided, that in any congres¬ sional district where there is no republican congressional committee the republican state committees’ hall apiioiut from the residents of such' district a committee for the purposl of calling a district convention to elect district delegates. The territorial del¬ egates shall be chosen in the same manner as the nomination of a dele¬ gate in congress is made. The dele¬ gates from the District of Columbia shall be chosen at a convention to bo called by the committee of three pro¬ vided for by the national committee at its meeting in Washington City, on December 10th, 1895, and such con¬ vention shall be constituted of mem¬ bers elected in district primaries to be held at such time and place and pre¬ sided over by such judges of election as said committees of three may ap¬ point. representation “In addition to the now authorized by the rules of the na¬ tional convention for the territories of Utah, NewMesxico, Oklahoma and Ari¬ zona, the committee advises each of said territories to elect four delegates and the admission of such additional delegates to the convention is recom¬ mended. “An alternate delegate for each del¬ egate to the national convention to act -n case of the absence of the delegate, shall be elected in the same manner and at the same time as the delegate is elected. “All notices of contests must be filed with the secretary of the national committee in writing, accompanied by printed statements of the grounds of contest, which shall be made public.
