To-dav the democrats of the county will meet in mass meet¬ ing and name a new executive committee. What action the new committee will take as re¬ gard- the suggestion of consoli¬ dating matters and nominating state and county cfficersat one and the same time, June 6th, we have no idea, but in our opinion such action should be taken. It is urged against this suggestion that J une 6 is a busy season and a fair expression cannot be bad because the far¬ mers will not come out. When such flimsy objections are forced to the front it is the highest possible evidence that there is no argumetative reasons against the suggestion. Farmers are necessarily interested in mat¬ ters political just now and it is to their interest to take part in all elections. They must pro¬ tect their interest at the bal¬ lot box and they will do so in June just as readily as they would in any month in the year. The papers that make use of that argument need no nerve tonic. Why, there is not a gold bug in Georgia that could be tied away from the pools on election day, and why these gold-bug papers offered that ob¬ jection can be explained only by the fact that they could think of no other. Consolidation cannot possi¬ bly hurt the party. It disposes of some matters a little earlier than lias heretofore been the cistom, but that will be an ad¬ vantage not only to the candi¬ dates but to the people. At the same time we hold that it would be propei and fair for the people to ballot at the June pri¬ mary for their choice for U. S. senator. For some time there has leen a growing sentiment among the peoble for the elec¬ tion. by the people direct, of Luited States senators, and con¬ gressman the Crisp has asked that iligs people be allowed this priv at the June primary. Everybody the favors the plan, eveD single standard advocates can find no objection other than the early date mentioned. They feel that the people of the state need more tutoring on the smgle standard idea and would like for Cleveland to get iu an other bond issue before the people act. In the meantime the people 1 1 several of the most important counties of the State have came together and decided to consoli¬ date the primaries and vote for senator on Juue 6. We hope that the executive committee of Rockdale will order likewise. Alex Carr, the slayer of Capt. King iu Atlanta, and who has been ct'azv in Fuiton county ] years, grew more decidedly !° crazy ? Mr. Editor; I noticed among the visiting attorney’s, in attendance upon the superior court of Newton coqnty, Judge A. C. McCalla, of the county of Rockdale This being Rockdale county’s time to name the candidate, who is to represent this senatorial district in the next legislature, I de¬ termined to ascertain from a number of our prominent and influential men, who of the (it izens of Rockdale, wan their choice for Senator. Every man, without any exception, was for Judge McCalla, first, last and all the time. There are few men, -who live in Newton coun¬ ty, who have more friends than Judge McCalla, but as to the citizens of other counties I know of no man who can compare with McCalla, both as to num¬ bers and influence If Judge McCalla could have heard the complimentary things that were said about him, being a dffident man, I know he would have been embarrassed. Those who have been pro¬ nounced in their advocacy of Judge McCalla for Senator, say he is honest, fearless and com. petent. Heis uncompromising in his opposition to what he be¬ lieves to be wrong and abso¬ lutely unchangable in his advo¬ cacy of what he believes to be right. Those who know Judge McCalla best tell me that with ail his acknowledged firmness he is as kind hearted as a woman and that no one ever comes to him in trouble who does not go away relieved, if in his power to relieve them As a confederate soldier, though a boy, he was always among those who were the first to scale the enemies works. No man is better informed as to the wants of his people, and few men are better informed upon the leading-issues of the day. A fearless and uncom¬ promising advocate of bi-met alism, a democrat with a record without spot oi blemish, able and fearless in debate, versed in parliamentary law, broad¬ minded and conservative, al¬ ways according to others the same sincerity of purpose that he claims for himself, and above all, a christain gentleman. Our people will be honored by such a representative and Judge McCalla and friends need give themselves no concern a bout delegates who will repre¬ sent Newton county in the next senatorial convention Respectfully, Bi-metalist. It is Rockdale county’ time to nominate a State Senator for this district. We have seen no mention of candidates as yet. —Walton News. It is evident that Brother Na¬ pier has not been reading the Weekly’ as closelv as he might. It has been sometime since we first announced that Judge A. C. McCalla and Dr. J. A. Stew¬ art’ of our town, would meet and contend in the political a rena for the honor of represen¬ ting the district in the Senate. In this issue Judge McCalla is formally announced for the ffice and will proceed to ply his un¬ disputed talent in the interest of his race. The Judge is thoroughly equipped, would make us an able and popular representative and we hope he may meet with your good favor, Brother Napier.
