Sincerely, T. A. SLOCUM, M. C., IS3 Pearl St., Hew York. r ,— Tho Editorial and Badness Management of (Ala Poner tiaarantee tins generous Proposition. Letthe People Choos-iJ In cm opinion the proposition of Mr. Crisp, that the people be allowed to express their choice for United States senator at the june primaries, is as fair and honest as can be desired. This matter of going before a legislature composed of unin¬ structed members, many of them with personal axes to grind on a matter of such grave import as the United States sen atorsbip, has grown tiresome. Let the people choose and express their choice at the ballot box where there will be no swap¬ ping or trading in connection with the filling of this high and honorable post of duty. That is true democracy, the rule of the people. The tyranny of a. few men is, if possible, worse than the des¬ potism of one individual, from the fact that there are prop ortionatly large number of self¬ ish ends to meet and personal ambitious to gratify. This is intended to be a government for the people. Therefore, let it be by the people. If there are others whose am¬ bitions rise to the exalted posi¬ tion of United States senator, lot them go before the people, as Mr. Crisp proposes to do. If they are afraid to risk a pop¬ ular vote their aspirations must bo founded on a very flimsy es¬ timate of their own fitness foi that high position. Wc give Mr. Crisp the credit for being an honest man Whatever his views may be on financial question, he has the manhood to stick to them. He has proven his loyalty to the state and to tho party during a long term of public service, dur¬ ing which he has never faltered or changed front through the fiercest contests. Fulton and Floyd have acted. They are two of the six counties of the state having the largest representation in the general assembly. Let others follow suit and make it posiblefor the democratic voters of the state to give voice to their sentiments at the polls on June 6. That is certainly the fairest and most the openhanded way to conduct campaign and no fairminded person can offer any objection to such a method of procedure. —Rome Tribune. rf fi Burning Or Freezing. You may not know it, but the fact is that I am not as young as I onco was; I have reached the time in life when it seems wise to take care of myself. Don’t misunderstand mo as saying that I am old, for I’ll resent that nity very promptly, form but I have the opportu¬ to other business connections which will leave my time much more to myself, will give me less responsibility, will be eas.er and at the same time bring in more remuneration. Mr. Speer has been here with me for 12 vears, aud for four years was with his brother. -He can give the bond readily. He is magnificently equipped for the office and I, knowing his splendid quali¬ fications and his splendid ability, believe that he is just the man to be elected state treasurer. The treasury would run along under his management just as it runs now. There are not too many good things that yon can say of Bill Speer. He is one of the truest men that over lived, a magnificent bnsiuess man. one who knows every phase of the work of this office, and he is, as I say, magnifi¬ cently equipped.
