Editor O’Kelly insists upon continuing to make himself re diculous to the extent of the lim¬ ited circulation of his altogeth¬ er neutral Banner. The per¬ sistence of this man of boasted ( ( experience” and far-reaching knowledge, in penning little empty. spiteful, misleading and senseless squibs, aimed at the Weekly, serves no other purpose than that of amusing the really intelligent citizens of the town who chance to see a copy of his paper. His latest thrust is based upon vrhat he claims was our prediction that he would pull Dr. Stewart down to defeat along with himself. Every ready of the Weekly— six hundred all told—will deny that we ever made a prediction of this kind. How the “experi¬ enced” gentlemen ever found the nerve to charge the same to us without outraging his reli¬ gion and totally obliterating his conscience will remain a ques tion to the end. The precedent he has established recently jus fies us in concluding that should we publish him as a gentleman and scholar he would intepret it as branding him a scoundrel and ignoramons. Such is his power of comprehension and construction of plain english. To our thinking lie is a consid¬ erable freak and since we always feel tenderly for the af Dieted it really proves a task for us to thus give public ex¬ pression to such facts as should be withheld from the world as much as possible. We really sympathize with brother O’Kelley and indulge this plain speaking in the hope that he may alter his course if in his power it lies. Livingston may be bad mon¬ ey but he doesn’t fail to circu¬ late. Jfthere is such a thing as luck in politics that Con¬ gressman surely must hold the major part of it. We doubt if the slickest rabbit foot manipu¬ lator in the land could hold his own against him. It is is now conceded by all creeds and parties that the Na¬ tional convention will adopt a 16 to 1 platform straight. In case this concession materializ¬ es in fact we will most proba¬ bly elect a real democratic pres¬ ident a little later on. To The Public. I wish to express my grate¬ ful appreciation for the support given me by my friends in the primary ot . , last . „ Saturday. , I T shall always carry in grateful remembrance , the e tiorts of my many friends in my behalf. Bemieotfi.il Sit v June loth no J(>. WP \\ . G. Clotfelter. „ hev. Howard Urumley, r of Atlanta, will preach in the Methodist church to-morrow. Treat Him Fair. We observe, now that con¬ gressman Livingston has vir¬ tually secured renomination, that Hon. Chas. I. Branan is entertaining an idea of making an independent race against him, while some other would be aspirant for congressional hon¬ ors, hailing from Atlanta, thinks to hob up against him without to guide him. So far as Kockdale is concerned this is al themerest folly and we beleive all the other counties in the district will view the suggestion of final and iude P endent opposition to Livingston with the same feel¬ ing of disgust. This opposition would only serve to inject dis¬ cord and worry unto what now promises to be atieasy and quiet political victory for the democ¬ racy of the Fifth district. To far as Mr. Branan is con¬ cerned, he had a fair opportuni¬ ty to show his political worth as opposed to Livingston in the primaries—he had his lieuten¬ ants in every county that has acted up to date and that is all that Mr. Livingston had. We believe in fair play—we think every body has had it and Livingston won as usual. Now to liarrass him by independent ism along with populism would be just a 1/ttle more than we can silently tolerate. The most docile daily paper in Georgia at the present writ¬ ing is that same Atlanta Jour¬ nal- It is oppressively quiet. Georgia joines the ranks of sound money 16 to 1 states and is as serene as a big sun-flow¬ er. There is nothing that suc¬ ceeds like a sufficiency of hon¬ est ballots. Some of the richest cartoons, illustrative of the death and burial of the now famous gold bug, have appeared in some of the big dailies the past few days, They are timely suggestive and wholly appropriate. ^ i fin uu And buy these bargains. The primary election in this county last Saturday passed with¬ out auy material disturbance, although the various candidates contested every inch of ground from begiuing to end. It was a fight simply and solely between the candidates fer a majoity of ballots, it having been known for tbe longest that Kockdale was practically solid for sound money, at 16 to 1. The sun smiled upon the voters throughout the day and bal¬ loting was lively at all times. of the primary tne The altogether unusual feature was unan¬ imity with which it condemned the maimed cadidates. T’«ey were downed withouta single exception. This result lias been attributed by some, to combination between other candidates. The poles were open to all who wished to vote and the result shows that many votes were drawn from the populist and repub lican ranks. The following table gives the correct vote by dis tricts. This is encouraging as it probably indicates a falling off in the populist ranks. Mr, James Dukes polled 75 more votes in this primary than he did two years ago, yet he failed of the nomination. It all points to an increase in democratic strength, and now that we are in close range of the free silver game there is every reason to hopa that the party will continue to strengthen.
