On the third of next month we are to elect a man to represent us in congress. Our vote may determine the issue, A very heavy responsibility ]• si.b upon us. The character Oi ’ the man chosen will reveal t ■ character of those choosing him. He stands in our stead and if a good man We may ex pect a blessing. If he is not a good man, but one devoid of principle and conscience we may surely expect to he the suffer ers. The good book “ays when /•lie righteous are in authority the people rejoice and when the wicked bear rule the people mourn. This is a law holding good in every nation as history plainly shows, Look at the misery and corruption of 1 ranee under Louis Xl\ and of En¬ gland under the reign of Charles IT By electing bad men we put power into their hands to work the greater mischief and by their bad examples to make vice popular. This is done just in the same way that water runs down hill. For as the good book again says. t i The wicked wa'iK on every side when the vilest men.are exalted. 1 } Now, no one will deny that we have fallen in evil times. The way our elections have been cord acted here lately has dis gn-d v i every decent man in the county. Not merit or truth but whiskey rules the hour. No poor man who wishes to do light and who refuses to 'stoop to ways that are dark need as¬ pire for any office. Surely it is time we should call a Halt. Let ys no longer put a premium on trickery and vice, but rebuke all such aspiiauts and vote for the best man, Now we have one good man before us whose excellencies are known to every voter in the comity; a man who never be¬ trayed a trust nor deceived a friend. Who, by the dint of native talent, without any coi kgut or liberal education, has forged his way to the front, both :n church and state. This man is honest and cannot be bribed, tr|ilhM and WCU]J not Het0 , . fellow . ,, for „ the . trident ... Ins man ot Neptune or the thunder , of Jove. r In . intelligence . . he is the peer of . the ., . best men in the . po :uical ... .... Georgia . and , . arena in in purity .. and , morality .. stands , as high . . . above . „ them , many oi as Splugen 0 , above , the ; Alps. ,, In , morals his character is above reproach. In working ability and manly, mother-wit tact he has few equals. Such a man al ways can do more for his con si,Tientsin the halls of legisla¬ non than the babbler who soon loses all influence with his asso ciates. A man who has led in every movement that would contribute to the material pro gross and moral welfare of Bock county. A man who, a mong his other good deeds, sue -ded in ns the s,oc k shops ^'v and from in our during county and whiskey in so j - ping the guano laws as to f • ' our farmers hundreds and thousands of dollars, A man uho iias leci tlle wa y iu farming and has thus set an example of industiy to the surrounding A man whose probity and rectitude _ and high toned condifct have gained foi him the confidence, admiration and esteem of Georgia from the mountains to the seabord. In this portrait you see before you W.L. Peek. His likeness is visible in every lineament of the picture. Of such a fellow-citi¬ zen and county mafl we may well be proud, May we not then indulge the hope that ev¬ ery voter in this county without regard to party lines will show their appreciation of such a distinguished fellow-citizen and compliment him by making his vote unanimous. “Do right and fear not, let all the ends thou aims’t at be thy country’s, thy God’s and truth’s.” • Rockdale, Judge Crisp Dead. The announcement of the death o'f Judge Chas. F. Crisp, which occurred in Atlanta yes¬ terday afternoon at 2 o’clock, shocks and saddens the entire country. It was known that he bad been in feeble health and that he had been confined in Atlanta for five weeks past with malarial fever, but no one ex¬ pected that his condition was so serious. His death was sud¬ den and is attributed to heart failure. Thus one of our ablest and purest statesmen passes away in the midst of his career and when, it seems to us, his servi¬ ces were most needed. This death comes near being a nation¬ al calamity. Peek Withdraws. Col. Peek has withdrawn from the congressional race. He lias nothing to say concern¬ ing the matter. Ho went to Atlanta late yesterday evening to be present at a conference held there last night. . He says the populist electoral ticket, will be withdrawn also and the boys will.vote as they please. From his conversation we judge that the party L in a bad' muudie and there is little hope of straightening it in this cam¬ paign. Col. Peek doesn’t say that he D down in favor of the repub¬ lican nominee. For Next Mayer., It is understood that Maj E. II. Aim a nd will not be a candidate for re-election to the office of mayor for 1897. How would ftur fellow-citizen, P. G, Tucker do for the place? He is worthy and well quali¬ fied. No Fusion, I The Democratic' executive committee of the state met in Atlanta last Tuesday to take ac¬ tion upon the demand of the populist, party for fusion. After due consideration the committee disposed of (he mat ter by pasing the following resolution unanimously; Whereas, The populist exe¬ cutive committee has made a proposition ignores which completely fusion by eliminating the candidacy of the democratic nominee for vice president, Mr. Sewail, and has cut off the democratic committee from fur¬ ther consideration of the ques tiot\ , by fixing ~ . an at i bit 1 at ..... n .nit J which expires today, giving this 1 Committee opportunity . c tor no consideration of a for proper fusion; therefore. Be it resolved, That the char ot . the , democratic , State ex- . . man ecutive committee appoint a committee of five, of which he shall be chairman, to properly present to the public the attitude of this committee in its refusal to accept the umreasonable and unjust ultimatum of the popu list committee, clothed as it is in offensive and unbecoming lau guage. By Convention. The Democratic state execu¬ tive committe passed the fol lowing resolution as to tin manner of selecting candidati for the Supreme bench: Resolved, That the several counties of the state are direct de to select, either by primary or mass meeting, as the execu tive committees of the severs counties may elect, two dele¬ gates for each representative m the lower house of the Geor gia legislature, to a couventio: to be held in the city of Atlani: on the 18th day of November next, to nominate candidate^ for four supreme court judges that said primary or mass meet¬ ing shall be held in each county on the 14th day of November next. Not long now until the eve¬ ning of the 3rd of November when people for hundreds of miles around 'will flock to At¬ lanta for the purpose of spend¬ ing the night reading the Con¬ stitution’s election bulletin'. The Constitution will possibly excell all its former efforts in this line and give the eager watchers an unusal treat. Much is always expected of the Constitution and it has a wg * of never disappointing its tnou - sands of friends. Register.
