VOL. XVI. Why They Advertise. X« Anpxchange truthfully says; ™ a re advertise * l advertisers, Some men a _ vertise as a mutter of charity help the editor get Ins __ b" t0 advertise help ead. Others to r show well the home paper up {Or the town; that's a good mo live. Some advertise because the paper is a home enterprise benefit to the town. Others s the ed advertise simply to get ifcors trade, and the very month his store bill falls below the advertising bill, timers suddenly becomes so hard that the mer chant- can’t really alford to advertise any longer.” Yes: and there is the wide¬ awake advertiser, the hustlfiig business man, who is out after the dollars and generally gets tneni, He advertises because it pays him. He makes it a of bis business, He takes a certain space in his home paper, fills it up with something that will catch trade- If times get dull hegives more attention to advertising. He gets up some¬ thing new and surprising al ways. However, confining himself strictly to truth and never misleading his customers The people read that man’s advertisement as they do the local columns of the paper. They have confidence in whal he says - they go to his s'ore to trade and by fair dealiig and courteous treatment, lie ‘holds their trade. Advertising in any of the above ways is commendable in a merchant, but it is a neccessary branch of his business to advertise in some way, and if neglected can only result in liis loss.
