Not a great deal has been heard of Mr. Watson since the election. Those populists who remaine away from the polls last Tuesp dav did so because they could not endorse republicanism, They are good democrats and we believe they will come back to the party. As usual the Atlanta Consti tution was faithful to its patrons and gave the lesult of the elec tiou throughout the union in twelve hours after the polls closed. The Constitution is a great newspaper. --------- Out of the 4-83 sound money voters in Rockdale we ought to get a few more subscribers.— Banner. These sound money voters are all of the Boss Buck stripe, and if the Banner will render a statement of its servi < ;s i.o the aforesaid Boss, per¬ haps he would subscribe liberal iy After running the Bryan tick¬ et on its ed'torio 1 page for months it is rather funny to find the fo "owing paragraph in the cur re. t issue of the Banner: “Rockdale is still Democratic or rather it would be on a de¬ cent Democratic platform.” We may suggest that the a bove paragraph truly portrays fcheattitudeof the Bannerin the national campaign. In behalf of the party, we take the liber¬ ty to thank the Banner for its a-dent support, editorially and at the ballot box, of the Bryan t : cket. Rockdale went Democratic in (hecounty election by a hind some Helms, majority. Judge A. M. a believer in sound mon¬ ey, receiving bis a majority of 364 over opponent. She wont republican last Tuesday iu the National election. Why?— Rockdale Banner. The answer is obvious. Mr. Helms was the nominee of the democratic party of the county and as such received the loyal support of free silver democrats Je .aidless of his sound money views. So likewise was Mr. B yaa a democ atic nominee and was defeated ia this county byce ,a : n well known, so-call¬ ed democrat* who didn’t abide the nomination. We may also rec. d just now ‘that the Banne: diun t advocate bolting, as its files wet show, just previous to the Chicago convention. ABSOLUTELY PURE Ttie Senatorship. Only a few more days and the Legislature will begin the official act of making a United States Senator to serve* the peo pie of Georgia for six years. These state representatives of the people should act as near |y as i8 possible in accord with the will of the people and then they will have unquestionably served the best interest of them state and party. Should they do this there is every reason to believe that <j ov , Atkinson will withdraw f rom the race in a very short time and that some other of the able aspirants for the place will be chosen, Georgia is in no condition to engage in another gubernato liai election at this time and in order to relieve the people even 0 f the possibility of such a po Htioal calamity Gov. Atkinson should immediately withdraw f r0 m the race. Should he per s i 8 fc j n pig course there is reason to dub him a political grab-all at the sacrifice of the best lnter e sts of party and friends. • He has been twice honored ^y {j ie p e0 p] e 0 f Georgia- with governorship and now he yvould willingly jeopardize their interests for personal promotion in the face of their appeals to him to remain at his post His ambition at this time is unwar ranted aud in plaiu English he deserves to be laid upon the s h e lf, -- Election in Rockdale. This republican majority renders most consni ■ nous the ten so-called Democrat¬ ic gold bugs who voted for Palm¬ er and Buckner. The negroes were thoroughly organized and voted stiaight McKinley lickets. Only about fifty populists vo¬ ted in the town precinct, and it is said they voted straight re¬ publican tickets. Many demo¬ crats failed to vote on accou it of the bad weather. The total vote polled iu the county was9G6. The battle of ballots has pass¬ ed and the republicans are in the full enjoyment of a great victory'. Win McKinley’s Boss Hanna calculated well and his man carried everything before him and made a grand passage to the White House. For the next four years the republicans will be in full pos¬ session of the government the complexion of both houses of congress is safely republican and they must deal with the vexing and complicated condi¬ tion of public questions to the satisfaction of the people. It is a great task before them •and will require the best states¬ manship of the party. South¬ ern democracy submits to the defeat patriotically and with¬ out a murmur and four years later will again give her un¬ qualified endorsement to some worthy statesman whose record bears adherence to sound dem ocratic principles, honest government and equal rights.
