CON YE I GA„ cz DEC. 24, 1896
W. H. Took One Load.
A Cincinnati gentleman re¬
lated to an Enquirer reporter
thru one night the late William
II \' anderbilt told him how the
old commodore had ostracised
him, both cor the reason that lie
did not think him possessed of
any business tact and that he
had married against his wishes.
Mr. Vanderbilt said that the
commodore told him he could
live ou a farm that he owned on
Staten Island, and that that was
all he would do toward his sup¬
port. Some time after that,
when their circumstances were
unusually poor and they were
having a decided struggle for a
living, the son went into his
father’s office. During the con¬
versation that ensued the old
gentleman inquired of the son
how his farm was doing.
latter leplied that the crop was
not good, and the farm seemed
to need fertilizing. * Well,’ said
commodore, -there is a lot
of horse refuse at my stable.’
‘I can’t get it because I have
no money,’
‘ I will give you a load—only
one,' and he v roto out an or¬
der upon his stableman fertile
one load.
The next day the commodore
went to his place and was sur
prised to see the entire collec¬
tion had disappeared
‘Where has that gone?’ he
asked of his stable hand.
‘William H. took it.’
‘But he only had an order for
one load.’
‘That’s all he took. ’
‘Why, what did he nave?’
‘A flatboat.’
William II. upon getting the
order had secured the assist¬
ance of one of the fiatboats used
a great deal Staten Islan
ders, it taken up
back of the old man’s place, and
all of the refuse was loaded on
to it. This seemed to open
old man’s eyes, for a day
ovu-o after that he paid
first visit he had in months to
hit son's residence, and soon
after that lti» son tvas ordered
to the citv, where he ever at
terward lived.
The Marietta Journal says:
“Rev. J W. Quillian, the new
pastor, preached his two first
sermons, morning and night
last Sunday at the Methodist
