Atlanta has a little sister down on the Georgia io^d, some tbit tv miles a wav, whose peculiar vi, eves and qual hits de?e ve moie than a passing men¬ tion. Conyeis is the name of this sister town, nod it is a Dame that stands well in the business and social wo.Id. Some ye.v.8 ago my attention was called to the fact, tbt one cannot turn a a stieet comer in Atlanta without meeting a Con re s man. Afier that I made it a point to take a priva e census on my own account in my daily walks. In the stmes I found dozens of c’ei'Vs who lived in Conyeis. At times the police fo. ce had a large percentage of men from tb it town. A leading roiuistei, teacher ant' tliiee prominent county officials were from the same place. A par.uer in a big drv goods firm, the preMdent of a bank, a bank cashier, an enterprising wholesale grocery merchant, feveral wealthy eo.fcon men. some tobacco dealers and a number of orher meicbants hailed fiom Conyers. To this list 1 soon ad led two popular physicians two or three lawyer ', sev¬ eral s.ieet ch■' d.ivers and bunded.' of men engaged in various occupations including about, forty or fifty drummers Mj census began to initrest me, and Ikent i u up in a casual way. Atone time I found in a large news paper building two or three printets, a pioo : -)eaueT, eievaior man, office boy engineer and one or two others f» om the town on the Georgia road. Hundreds of wb ! .:e a-'d bl.n.'k me cba.'ics came from the slave. Even the bill collcc - .id sir ance agents c’aiined Gon . .>ys > ! r former honse. Among them are I capitalists, mei chants, pie.'ess'oa'ii ®6n, many clftijos of toilers, old and I I i 70un g, hesides society young men ami pretty girls. I At.er giving up the count, 1 bad one. In Conyers the young people are ■ 'amed to habits of sobriety industry ard economy. The young men neither drink nor gamble nor indulge in other dissipa¬ tions. When they move io Atlanta and oth¬ er cities they cai ry their good htbiis and business methods with them, aod all of them have been successful, ltisadry town aod iDe man who wan s to ho. low a snake for selfish pm poses will have a long load to travel. But easy communication with Atlanta and Covington make the snake unnec¬ essary when a man is willing to pay f 'press charges on his medicine. Isit a quite place? Well, it is peace¬ ful and the people a. e pleasant and clever. They take the daily u.ipeis run up to Atlanta ireouently, and the youngs er s tead the new books ard a\e up to date in maov things. Altogether Atlanta’s little si-ter makes a mighty good showing. She evidently knows how to keep house for herself, and the wayfa ers she sends out into the world have pioved their ability and pluck. In the Da.ural course of events the town will grow- lo will have moie population and more weahk, and when they need them citv improvements and flourishes wilt be a ided I have singled out Conyers for special meudon because it is in some respects a remarkable communitv. But I am aware of the fact that At¬ lanta bus ct’ier little sisters within aia dious of fifty or sixty miles whosegood points deserve toe highest praise. As a rule, the average Geoi gia town is a good place for anybody to live in. borne of the best people I have ever known now 7 live in these small comtnu nitie?, or started there. With very few exceptions, every successful lawyer, merel'antytankeq journalest, artisan or noun of atfaivs in Atlanta come from a town like Con¬ yeis or front the fanning districts.
