In writing to her mother, Mrs.

Miss Layona Glenn says:
“Your letter reached me day

called dairies, for there you see
the cows, chickens, cats, dogs,
men, women and children all
occupying the same hovel,
with some times only a parti¬
tion as high as your head sep
erating the cotv fron* the peo¬
ple. We also like it better
than getting milk from the
man that leads the cow round
t0 y° ur Sate, and milks her
there t0 sbow you that the milk
i 8 no t water. I wish you
could see that; sight! They
make a funny procession. TIu
man g 0es j a front with a lot of
tin buckets on his arm, of all
measures and sizes: lie leads the
cow by a rope about tenfeet long
the calf is tied to the cows tail
by another rope more or less
the same length, so he conies
draging along behind and al¬
together they are quite an ex¬
tensive procession. You might
at first thought, prefer to use
this milk but when you see that
same old sow driven home at
night after being dragged though
the street all day. see her fall
from sheer exhaustion and be
kicked and punched till she
struggles to her feet and stag¬
gers on a few feet only to fall
again and lie there till they
twist her poor old tail almost
into and hear her mourn with
the pain as she again gets
up and goes a little further, you
would come to the conclusion
that you would do without milk
forever rather drink that.
Then there is the coffee wbkh
is just excellent - the Brazilians
make it so strong and clear that
it looks almost like liquid ebo
ny. You could not drink it
as strong as they do till you
got used to it, but when you
did you would never again want
co taste'the stuff that we of the
States called coffee.
At Breskfast we have a cup of
ZZ
we take the strong black coffee
in tiny little cups that hold a
bout as much as one of your
silver table spoons twice full.
It is made very sweet as a rule,
but I like only a little sugar in
it. Then we have lots of dif
ferent kinds of vegitables, some
that we have at home, and some
that I never saw till I came here,
among these are the ‘‘cliurchu’
(shoO-shoo) which grows some
thing like gourds aud is opened
seeded, peeled, and sliced, then
boiled in clear water, then cov
ered with white sauceand ser
ved. The mandioca is a root
resembling the Spanish potato©,
but grows under a bush and not
a vine, and is more fibrous,
from this they make a kind of
Hour, grating it up and letting
it ferment, then dry. < ( Cara” is
another root very much like the
potatoe, rather tasteless, but
very nice when porperiy pre¬
pared. Then there is the “Ge
lo” that is very much the same
as the egg plant, and is pre
pared for use by dicing and
soaking it several hours in salt-1
water then , rolling ... in meal , and ,
browning m hot , „ laid. , ,
Of course there are lots ot the
