The first law of Congress fix¬
ing rates on postage was passed
Feb, 20th, 1792, and went into
effect June 1, 1792 The charge
established for transmitting let¬
ters was as follows:
Not exceeding 30 miles, 6 cts.
Over 30 miles and not exceed¬
ing GO miles. Scents.
Over 60 miles and not exceed¬
ing 100 miles, 10 c nt.s.
Over 100 miles and notexceed
ing 150 miles 121 cents.
Over 150 miles and not ex
ceeding 250 miles 17 cents.
Over 250 miles and not
ceeding 350 miles, 20 cents.
Over 350 miles and not ex¬
ceeding 450 miles 22 cents.
