SOUTH CAROLINA CAMPAIGN.

Given a Great Ovation—Hoyt Will
Get a Good Vote in Charlenton
County—Evan* Stirred Ip the En
thusiasm of the Meeting.
Charleston, S. C., June 16.—The state
campaign meeting for Charleston county
was held to-night at the Hibernian Hall.
Tne main auditorium of the building is
one of the largest in the city, but it
was crowded with voters, who had assem
bled to hear what the men with a burn
ing desire to serve the state of South Car
olina had to say for themselves.
There were present, all told, twendy
seven speakers, and as a natural conse
quence, the meeting was not over till a
late hour, notwithstanding the fact that
it slurted at 6 o’clock in the afternoon.
The chairman allowed a half hour to each
of the four men who want to be Gov
ernor, while the smaller fry had to say
their say in ten minutes.
There was little or nothing of the ex
citement. no< to say rowdyism, that used
to characterize the campaign meetings of
six. eight and ten years ago. There
were sharp spats between Mr. Patterson
and Gov. McSweeney and between Mr.
Moore and Attorney General Bellinger,
and occasionally there was an Interrup
tion from a voder who was overloaded
with rum or enthusiasm, but in the main
a respectful and an attentive hearing was
g> ven the speaker?.
McSweeney I. Pojinlnr.
Gov McSweeney Is very popular here,
and he was given an ovation, hut Col.
James A. Hoyt, Mr. Patterson and
Speaker Gary were all warmly applauded.
Col. Hoyt especially had the solid sup
port of the Prohibitionists, whose avowed
candidate he is. He made n strong
epeech and delivered it well, and while
the. country may be placed in the Mc-
Sweeney column. Col. Hoyt will proba
bly get a larger vote here than either
of the other men who ore In the guber
natorial race.
E. B. Evans, a candidate for railroad
commissioner, aroused more enthusiasm
than any of the other candidates for min
or office*. He denounced the present rail
road commissioners, and declare.! that If
he was elected, the people would have
"at least one honest man" on the board.
Il was a matter of general congratula
tion that the feeling which used to exist
between the up-country and the low-coun
try seems to have disappeared altogeth
er. The candidates spoke in the heartiest
terms of the great enterprises now on font
In Charleston, and pledged themselves to
support them whether they were elected
or not.
ROAD SEEMS ASSI HKD.
Promised That Augusta and Talla
hassee Will He Joined.
Fitzgerald, Ga., June 16.—The "proposed
new road from Augusta, Ga., to Talla
hassee, Fla., via Fitzgerald, Is without a
doubt an assured fact. A number of
prominent railroad men from New York
and other railroad men from the South
met here ftast night. What was accom
plished Is not known, as the meeting was
a secret one. The surveyors will begin
work in less than two weeks.
A carload of peaches left here this
morning for New York. Another, and
possibly two, will leave next Tuesday.
Good price prevail.
Mayor Thomas Wilson and wife leave on
Jun“ 28 for Cleveland, 0., wheis thty
will spend the summer.
A Knight of Pythias picnic was held
at Bowen's Mill, nine miles from Fitz
gerald, on-Friday. A special rate was
given by the Georgia and Alabama rail
road and fully 200 were in attendance
from Fitzgerald and Ooilla.
The election of Hon. G. W. Smith of
this city as delegate to the Kansas City
Convention gives universal satisfaction.
This section has been favored with
short rains every afternoon for the post
ten days. All kinds of garden truck is
very plentiful.
Postmaster Peiper gives up his office
here July 1. A. R. Hugins, his succes
sor, is In the office, with a corps of as
sistants, learning the ropes. II is report
ed that Mr. Peiper, together -.lth his
father and mother and brother, will leave
July 10 for Oklahoma.
Irwin county will have a warm cam
paign this year. From three to six can
didates have already announced for tic
different offices.
MAKES SENSATIONAL CHARGE.
Wood Claims Sims Forced Him to
Surrender Receipts.
Macon, June 16.—Rosa Bowdre was to
day appointed receiver for the books, ac
counts and choses in action of Raff Sims
The petition was presented by Lewis A.
Wood, who claims that in Sims’ private
office he was held up and by threats and
intimidation so overawed (hat he had to
surrender without consideration receipts
to cover $13,000 indebtedness due him by
Sims.
He says that while Sims threatened him.
Sims' bookkeeper, T. C. Holmes, stood
by holding his hand on his hip pocket,
"wherein he carries his pistol." He claims
that the receipts were written out and
signed up at the lime with the under
standing that the $13,000 was to be paid
then and there, but instead cf paying
money. Sims signed receipts and said:
"I don't owe you a cent, this is evidence
of (he fact; you can leave.”
Mr. Sims says he will show at the
proper time that he does not owo Mr.
Wood anything, that while he borrowed
SIO,OIO from him four years ago. he has
paid it back with more than legal in
terest.
Wood claims that he loaned Sima the
SIO,OOO to run a shoe business; thaf he was
to be i>aid $176 a month and half of Hie
net annual profit*. Theae payments wire
made until recently. Wood denies that it
was a partnership, and Sims says if it was
not a partnership then the payments
should have liquidated the indebtedness.
