July 13.—The rate of mortality here and on the surrounding isl ands has become appallingly Strange to relate, it is confined to the ne gro race. Apf>arently there is no epi demic to account for such an unusually high death rat#* in a section noted for the longevity of its p*opl?- The sanitary condition of the town is excellent, and it is difficult to imagine the cause of the trouble. Over twenty negroes have died within the town limit* within a month, while in the country death is a daily vis itor. A concert was given at the arsenal here to-r.lght by the Ladles' Parsonage Society of the Carterel Street M K. Church. The ladies worked hard to insure the success of th*lr entertainment, and were re warded by liberal patronage on the part of the people of Beaufort. Besides vocal end instrumental music there was tab leaux, recitations, etc., at the conclusion of which an abundance of excellent cake and cream was disposed of. WASHINGTON IT URIASWICK. Slater fund, and were each time greeted by packed houses. To-night, at the First African Baptist Church, one of Brunswick's largest edi fices, the building was crowded beyond Ps standing room capacity with both white and colored people, all of whom enjoyed Washington * lecture on the pica of In dustrial education for the negro race, and responded to hi? sentiments by liberal and frequent applause. It is annnounced to-night that the en tire Fifth Regiment will come up from Cumberland at 4 o'clock to-morrow' morn ing and take a special train to Atlanta, In order to reach home and attend Capt. Norfolk, Va., July 13.—John N. Vaughan sold Barbee Cos. a large quantity of cot ton on Sept. 19, last, the sale being based on the fake quotations from Liverpool sent over this country by Hire that dov. which considerably increased the price of cot ton. Barbee & Cos. subsequently repudiated the sale and Vaughan sued.
