Atlanta. July 14. lnformation was re
ceived here to-day, that Henry C. Saey.
Jr., night superintendent of the Munon
Caldwell Grist Mill, two miles from Stone
Mountain, was burned to death in the
mil! last night. It is supposed that the
young miller went to sleep and the mill
taught Are either by friction of some
parts of the machinery, or by the explo
sion of his lantern. His body was burned
beyond recognition, and the entire mill,
with all the machinery md flour, s a to
tal loss.
The mill had been operated at night
for some time, in Older to catch up with
the orders which were looked. it was
run by water power, furnished by Moun
tain creek Last night Seay relieved tho
day force and began his work on the nli
night run. Just before midnight, tho
flame* awaked the farmers living in the
vicinity of the mill, but when they reach
ed the scene, the building had fallen in
and nothing could he done.

miles from Atlanta, shot himself twice
in the breast with a pistol at noon yes
terday. He died at 2 o'clock this after
noon. The suicide occurred t the homo
of the unfortunate man 111 health is
ascribe*d as the cause. The directors of
•he mill had recently given McDerment a
ninety-days' leave of absence. He leaves
a wife and two children.

Death of Hon. M. I*. Reese—Dillard
Herndon to Be Hunger!.
Washington. Ga., July 14.—Hon. M. P.
Reese died here yesterday. Mr. Reese
bad represented his county In the Legis
lature and the district in the Senate. For
many years the Arm of William Repso
& Son led in all legal affairs here, and
they were sold to have more influence in
local politics than all the rest of the coun
ty put together. In the pursuit of hij
profession he had amassed quite a large
fortune. ,
The flat of the. liw that Dillard Herndon
must die for the murder of Lovingood,
has been affirmed by the Supreme Court.
It is understood that no effort will lie made
to bring his case before the Pardoning
Board.
Sheriff Callaway, of barbecue fame, has
gone to New York to cook a barbecue for
one of the metropolitan clubs. A number
of the club tasted his famous cookery and
would have no one else to prepare the
feast.

Atlanta, July 14.—Judge Reagan this af
ternoon passed upon the petition of Rock
street citizen* to prevent the At an a Rapid
Transit Company from laying its tracks
on that street. He refused to grant an
Injunction.
Mnj. Wooten of Albany was In the city
to-day and secured permission for the
Fourth Georgia Regiment to go into camp
at Cumberland Island. The Fourth will
use the same site the Fifth has occupied
during this week.
A. J. Scott has been named as first lieu
tenant and adjutant of the Third Georgia
Regiment to succeed A. P. Coles, resign
ed.
Lowry Arnold, of the law firm of Ar
nold & Arnold, and Miss Joan Clarke,
youngest daughter of T. M. Clarke, will
be married in November. Both are popu
lar in Atlanta society.

Rome, Ga., July 14.—Bassill Phillips, n
13-year-old boy, wa badly Injured by col
lision with an electric car to-day. He
drove on the track in front of an ap
proaching oar. The wagon was smashed.
The boy had his thigh broken and his
band badly mashed, and a bad cut on his
head. The accident may result in his
death.
Two old citizens, E. 11. West and Mor
gan Mathis, have Just died here. Mr.
West had been a merchant here for thir
ty-five years, and Mr, Mathis had served
two terms as sheriff.
Rome Is to have a big street fair and
summer carnival, beginning Aug. 6. The
battle of Santiago will he reproduced in
fireworks, and there will be many other
features.

Fitzgerald. Ga., July 14.—Over 400 sup
porters of Hon. B. B. Cheney for the Sen
ate from the Fifteenth Senatorial Dis
trict met here last night, and organized
a Cheney club with nearly 300 names on
the petition. Addresses were made by
people from all parts of the county, and
from the tenor of their talks, Irwin coun
ty will give Mr. Cheney a large major
ity The district is composed of Irwin,
Telfair and Montgomery counties.
Hon. W. B. Algee was elected president,
■nd Col. J. G. Knapp, secretary. An
aggressive campaign will be urged in the
different districts. Mr. Cheney's oppo
nents are Ras Wilcox end Wiley Whit
tey.
