tions ways:
The hot dry weather has rapidly ma
tured corn, and under existing conditions

sections, and an excellent crop Is assured

Late corn Is drying In Central Kansas. Is
seriously Injured by drought In portions
of Kentucky, and will be shorl In W'e*t

the South Atlantic stales.
In the •■astern pari of the cotton belt
the majority of the crop l now open, and
the top crop Is advancing rapidly, but
has been delayed by show.rs In Florida
Complaints or rust, shedding and pro
mature opening continue, gnd some dam
age from rain has resulted to the open
staple in Ueorgla, while the bolls are
small and difficult to pick.
No serious Injury to cotton from the re
cent tropical storm l* reported from the
central section In Louisiana the first
picking Is yielding fatrly well, hut the
prospects for a top crop In that state, as
well as tjlssl-atppl and North Carolina,
are unfavorable. Blow progress was made
In picking In Arkansas, and Mississippi,
due to hot weather and scarcity of pick
er* In the first named state. Owing to the
prostration of wires by th tropical storm
which recently devastated Texas, no re
ports concerning cotton have been re
ceived from that stale
The greater iwrt of the tobacco crop
has been housed and curing t* progress
ing The late crop was seriously Injured

Darien, Oa., Sept. 11.—The political sit
uation In Mclntosh county has arrived at
that point In list Intensity usually termed
the boiling point. The four most warmly
contested races are those for clerk of the
Superior Court, ordinary, representative
and senator. The Democrats have nom
inated Mr. William H. Atwood for repre
sentative. and Col. David A. Smiley for
senator.
There have been no other Demoertlc
nomination* for other office*, but the ne
groes of this county have endorsed a can
didate for each office. Then Is no oppo
sltion to any of the negroes' endorsees
except for cl< rk of the Superior Court
and ordinary. The negroes Indorsed Mr.
J A llritt for ordinary, and he la oppos
ed by Col. Wyatt de K Barclay. They
Indorsed Mr. A Campbell Wylly for clerk

A point has already been made that the
election will l>c void In this county, be
cause the tax collector has failed to be at
hi* office the required number of day* be
fore the election, and has not observed the
hours present**! by law for keeping
the registration looks open each day.
Whether this dereliction of duty on the
part of the tax collector, If true, would
la* sufficient reason for voiding the elec
tion, remain* 10 b. seen.
The county bookkeeper. Mr. T. A
Stubbs, has been -n work for several
weeks, during such Intervals of time as
he could spare from his regular duties In
• timber office, checking up the hooks of
the county treasurer. Mr, F. K. Durans.
He has been endeavoring to trace a dis
crepancy between the amount of county
bill* shown to be outstanding by the
county hook*, and the amount taken up
and held against the county by the
county's redemption agent, the Darien
Dink The difference Is said to he about

discovered, but It will doubtless appear
when a thorough auditing of the books
has been completed. Mr. Durant ha*
been treasurer of the county for thirteen

Section 1. Be It ordained by the Mayor
and Aldermen of the city of Savannah. In
Council assembled. That whenever the
Sanitary Board of said city shall notify
the Mayor thereof that. In the opinion of
said board. It 1# neceesary for the preserv
ation of the health of the city to have cut
and removed from private pgogwrty In Ihe
said clly. or destroyed thereon, weed# and
other rank vegetable growth, the Mayor
shall Issue hi* proclamation requiring Ihe
