Louis XIV bad tala faults, anil one of
them wl the building of such an Infer
nally big building and then filling It full
of pictures. To Iha Jaded ami footsore
aearcher after the beauttftil there comes
a time when pictures pall and leg drag
0t f U a torture.
I was for going to Versailles Just aa
much aa Massinger was, amt the way out
there from the Gare 81. 1-axnre ran
through euch a pretty and Inviting coun
try. dotted here and there with dainty
villas and little hits of color ami restful
looking hills—restful. If Used to lie on;
not. If used for cllmbtng -that we felt our
selves getting Into Just the right mood
for the wonders to coroe.
Now, If we had arrived at the time of
the opening of the palace to alghtseers,
and had gotten a few feat In advance of
tha first vanguard of the Cooks, we would
have keen able to do tha leagues and
leagues of historical paintings—some of
tham vary had. by the way-wlth credit
to ourselves and delight to our aaaUiello
natures.
But Massinger was mad for the country
side of 11. "I want to sea the place where
the ladles of the court used to forget the
artlflelally of their life by milking real
cows and searching for real hens' eggs
I want to sea the fountains and the trim
and much pruned gardens. I want to gel
as near to nature as the artlttca of the
pruning shears will let tno "
Massinger Is always eioijuenl when he
is homesick, and I saw that Iho only thing
to do was to follow him ami let each little
pool remind him of I-oko Champlain.
•'The way was long amt weary, but
manfully we strode,** And the hand of the
landscape gardener could not keep out the
sweet smell of the woods, nor the tune
ful song of the blackbirds, and under the
witchery of Iha rustic beauties of Ver
aailhM wa forgot that thero were galle
ries. and wondered through boaky della
and feel the Huh with scrape of paper that
we happened to have 1 our pockets. If
we had had cake or meat they should
have had 11. but they snatched at the pa
pers eagerly, even aa Americana do when
returning from European exile, and we
watched them fighting for their intel
lectual lunch and reflected That some of
the biggest of them may have been alive
tn Madame de Malntelton's time, and th.it
Marie Antoinette may have fished for
them, or also milked some of the vener
able cows that we saw lastly chewing
Their French cud* as they reeled on the
meadows In the warm July sun.
Ami we saw the **voliurea" that had
been used on el ite ocoae.on*. and note I
wllh wonder that they were not rubber
tired, and we saw furniture that was so
dirty and cheap looking that we had a
p.w opinion of l-oule XlV.'a taste n-l
Udine**. Why. some of It looked like
that In the sewing-roan of a despondent
dressmaker. The furniture in Ihe ••House
In the Womb" in the Hague was Just ns
eld, but It sal as clean ns a New England
milk pan and as fresh looking aa Ihls
morning's milk. They do these things
batter In Holland,
I will never forget my experience with
one of thoae rams clean ch.itrs In the
"House In the Wwxls ** Keeling tired,
for we had gone afoot from our hotel In
the Hague. 1 sat down on a chair that
William the Silent had Knight at a bar
gain sale In Hsr.ero -and wc got the be-t
of the bargain whatever he may have
paid for It. The old Dutch woman who
was piloting ua around did not nollee me
for n minute, but when she did she
couldn't think of a word In I>utch or Kn
gllah to oay. She etmpiy lifted her hands,
aa If she wets pulling a me it see cat oil
a green cushion, and I. understanding the
pantomime, rose hastily. Then she ex -
plained In grasping tones that no on* hint
ever sat on Itiat chair since William the
Hilart had refrained from conversing on
It.
Well, to get hack to Versailles, after
wa had seen the (irand Trianon and the
petit Trianon, we were ready for an bloat
lunch under the tree* that have aloud fur
90 many years aecura froen American
axes. *
We found a place, an Meal place, so !
rustic that our tablecloth and plaies were
already covered with loaves and blosscena
that bad floated down from Ihe hlelortc
branches above.
Baedeker say* that meals are expen
sive at Versailles, but we saw that our
"de)euner" would coat hut three franca,
wllh wine, and wa thought that cheap.
To he sure, that was before it had eaten.
They brought ua a soup that was w>m<-
wtiat attenuated. It had r lined the day
before, and I don"t think they could have
been careful about their tarpoullns. Then
we ordered a "blf-ateaek." The French
do love to spell beefsteak. They remind
roe of the way Shakespeare toved with
Til* name. Now it will be "trtfieck" or
"blftek"—lf the French la not at all a man
of letters; or maybe that Is the phonetlr
way of spelling It. Hut other* are more
prodigal of letters, and they expand It un
til It becomes "boafeate.u-ke '* Hut to
•how their contempt for perfidious Albion,
they never spell It the Kngllsh way. We
found that our host hud exhausted his
energies on the spelling of the viand, for
It turned out to be. not what an American
would call a steak, hut a place of roast
beef. vary thin, cooked yesterday and
fried again to-day. Shades of Savarln
what a dlah!
Aa Massinger attacked it. he said, and
there waa a suspicion of pat ho* m m*
tone. “Think of It. Madame de Malmenon
probably milked this poor beast and to
day w finish him." It Is sometimes easy
to see that Massing* r waa torn ami
brought up In the clly.
But we didn't Hnleh the steak. We felt
aura that It waa not for us to destroy a
link that bound Versailles to the ht-lort
past and so we turned our attention to
vegetables and there we found what we
wanted. If millions of cooks, all
over America would come to
France ami lake a few lessons In ihe very
fine art of cooking vegetables, million.-
more of dyspeptic man would rtss up and
call them hlesaed and tha sound thereof
would extend even from the coast of
Maine to the waters of the Pacific.
Borne cheeses and n glace completed our
repas I and when we paid the bill wa de
cided that Baedeker hail the right of It;
That meals were expensive In Versailles—
that Is. considering that wa were In
France, where food la cheap.
We now visited the world renowned
fountains, but they wr not playing I
was not surprised, for II they charge you
for the water you drink nt table they are
certainly not going to run fountains all
day long for nothing, llaedeker aaya
that it costs 12.MJ0 to run the whole group
of fountains for a few hours. I don't see
why they don't use "vln ordinaire" and
then it would be cheaper, much cheaper
—bealdes being very pretty to see red
wine spouting from the mouths of dol
phins and frogs
