Editor Morning News: There appeared
an article In your paper of the 16th in
stant giving estimate of amount of life
Insurance the <*ool parties would pay o
the survivors of the Galveston disaster for
policies carried on those who perished,
and placing the amount at ten million dol
lars
This most extravagant estimate is cal
culated to prove disastrous 4o the work
of procuring further relief for the suffer
ers. and should be corrected.
Now. a very high estimate for the loss
of life for Galveston and all the storm
swept section is I.oo® people. Of this num
ber seven-eenths are women and children
—-a statistical calculation applied to such
disasters making the death allowance
for men of all ages and conditions num
ber 5.4>: Of this number, not more than
one man In six carried a policy of any
amount; that Is to my. not more than <W>
men were Insured.
A liberal average for this number of pol
icies would be |2 500. making a sum to>al of
91.nOO.or*> These figures will not be reach
ed an*! even admitting that they were.
It would give very little Immediate relief
ns guardians for children and Adminis
trators for estates would - have to le ar
ranged before the companies could pay
claims to say nothing of time consumed In
finding nd arranging claimants.
It Is true that one-half of the loss will
fall on “The Three (Hants." as they car
ry one-half of the life Insurance every
where.
