New York. Sept. 21—Considerable ex

Ihe cotton market, following a sharp re
action at Liverpool, where the statistical
position showed further reduction In
stocks of all kinds Our market opened 9ft
11 point* lower and while Irregular, work
ed mainly upward on active covering by
short* at large, supplemented Ity some
pretty good Investment buying. Unfavora

remained the heal buyers, a large Interest
having been created on Ihe late decline.
The afternoon buyer* were also largely In
fluenced by prediction* thnt the advance
here would he more than responded to hy
Liverpool and sentiment became quite
generally bullish. An element In local cal
culations was a fear lhal unfavorable

movement at a time when the shorts
were relying upon heavy receipts. Much
excitement prevailed In the afternoon, Ihe
firmer feeling being .stimulated hy re,torts
Indicating that the Southern spot mar

steadying up. Confidence was somewltgt
checked, however, by a.ldillonal reports
