humor from law report* and amusement
from collection* of the statute* The
searcher, tn fact, who has a scent for hu

luminating the paces of prefare or Index,
There i* the preface propitiatory and the
preface arrogant, the address to the read

the author, ond another form which
throws she book at the reader's head.
There is also the candid preface, os, for
Instance, In that prefixed t<> a dictionary
of long ago. wherein the compiler excused
his lexicographical labors on the Indisput
able around that he miaht have been
worse employed. Prefaces sometimes con
tain unconscious revelations. In the pre
face to a book published only a few weeks

addresses him-u-lf not lo the scholiast, hut
to the sncral render. One wonders whnt
kind of a person the writer look a schol

Index humor, like that of the orefac*.

use I to tencal with unction a terrible
curse Invok and by a frlenel of his on Ihe
heads of all such as Issued Indexless
hocks-a curse with a terrifying allusion
to a district beyond the Infernal regions
"where the devil could not gel for sting
ing nettles!" No one knows better than
an antiquary or a grubber among old and
miscellaneous volume* of forgotten lore,
how exasperating I* the look crammed
with matter on n hundred different sub
jects. but unprovided with any kind of
alphabetical key to Its contents. Lord
Campbell, at the end of Ihe preface
tn the last volume of his "Live* of the
Chief Justices," wrote In all seriousness:
"Bo essential did I consider an Index to
be lo every book that I propose to bring
a bill into i*rllament lo deprive an author
who publishes a hook without an Index
of the lU-l' ll gi of myprlght, and. more
over to subject him. for hi* ofTense. to a
pecuniary penalty." Huch drastic legisla
tion. however, has not yet come Into
force. One writer of long ago was foolish
enough to explain why he Issued his hook
without an Index, and the explanation I*
amazingly absurd The I took was Howe]'*
"Discourse IVncf rnlng the Precedency of

end the wr.ter remarked: "The reason

they couched In an Index. It would make
a column ns hlg as the book, and so
make the postern gate to bear no propor

But even when Ihe Indeg Is duly pro

There I*, for Instanee. the exasperating

of the most amusing Indexes In existence
Is ihe “Alphabetical Table fer the Dteoly

"Notts anil Queries''—lhe eccentric John
